Verm vs. Perlite
    #3650989 - 01/20/05 12:29 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Is it better to roll your cakes in verm or perlite when they are ready to go into the fruiting chamber? Also, when exactly are you supposed to roll cakes in either, and how?

Thanks, Brian

verm holds water best thats what you want to roll in. Perlite is only used to raise the rh to 90%; you do not want to roll in perlite.

Roll em verm. It's sterile out of the bag, so don't worry about sterilizing it.

Just dunk your cakes for 12-24 hours in 10:1 water / hyrdogen peroxide (3%) in the fridge. After you dunk them, roll them in verm while they are still wet, the verm will stick to them. Place in fruiting chamber and spray heavily until verm is moist.

so dunk the cakes that are covered in mycelium in the 10:1 solution, then roll them? That wont damage the cakes in any way?

"That wont damage the cakes in any way? "

what? the dunk or the roll? neither the dunk nor the roll will damage them. good luck with your grow.

NOT TRUE. While created by heat, it is neither transported, stored, nor packaged under, nor in "sterile" conditions.

Often there are even holes in the bags...around plants and molds and spores all day. Fuck that, I sterilize anything that goes near my babies.

Better safe than sorry I always say, put it in a pan and in the oven at 350 for 45 min. let cool compleatly before using. That's for rolling or casing, if it's for the substrate mix don't worry PC will take care of it of course.

Your just lucky...so far...IMHO.

Always make sure to sterilize your Verm...don't be lazy and take chances of getting contams.

Are you still just growing PF cakes?...if you are...you are sterilizing it by pressure cooking or boiling jars.

there's no need to dunk a casing. it's just messy. spraying the top of the casing will do.

i sterilize my verm. before it gets close to my mushies as well.

i had a double-end casing tub in my perlite i got a bit too lazy to pull out. i had a mini-mushroom growing out of the verm there... after i saw that, i realized i needed to pull it out. i didn't think it was going to harm anything seeing as i'm pulling and cleaning everything after this flush finishes in a few days... but that was just strange.

The thing is every bag is different and verm is mostly clean right out of the bag. You can usually get away with it but do you want to take the chance that you got a bag that happened to be right near some sort of mold and is full of it and kill your entire grow just because you didnt want to PC some verm for 30 minutes? Or at least oven or nuke it....

Especially if your making casings with it and not just rolling cakes in it. Cakes are more resilant to contams then whole grains and casings with unsterilized verm/casing mix are more likly to contam then a cake rolled in that. I know we're talking about rolling cakes in this thread but those doing casings should know this stuff <-- too..

Once the verm bag has been opened in unsterile environment its wise to sterilize it prior to usage.....
