Temperatures
    #3649168 - 01/19/05 04:07 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

setup: quart jars, sitting on top of a folded pillow case in their cardboard box, sitting on top of a folded towel. a walgreens heating pad is under the towel. it's all inside a plastic tub.

question - the low setting on the heating pad keeps temperatures a few degrees below (mid-82s) the optimum. medium keeps temps a few degrees above (88s). since the temp cannot be sustained between 84 and 86 with this setup (which, for reasons that aren't worth getting into, cannot be altered), which is better - a few degrees below or above optimum? how hot is too hot?

thanks

or put it on medium and put a towel between the 2 and see what you temp sits at. may need some tweeking (2 towels, high with one towel and so on) but eventually you should figure the best for your needs.

As I understand it, 82 isn't so far off from optimal. As the mycelium raises its' own temperature a couple degrees, having a low to mid eighties environment will make the cake/casing just about mid eighty.

In some pet stores - you can often find little "dial-a-temp" rheostats (like dimmer dial for lights)for reptile heat pads that are inexpensive.

Simply turn heating pad switch on HIGH, plug it into dial type rheostat & then you can adjust temp from zero to max, setting it anywhere inside that range.

it was up to 88 for a few hours. is this in any way harmful to the mycelium or spores? it's well below the thermal death limits listed on this site. the temps are cooling down but is there any reason to worry about previous temps?

no 88 is fine mine stays between 80-85 all the time

also thermal death is 106 if you heating pad is doing that something is messed up

temps too high or too low will slow growth but they wont hurt anything

For incubation...81 to 83 degrees F is optimal.

Good luck!~

At 88 degrees with the mycelium producing its extra few degrees the temp will be 90-92. NOT good. And a heating pad EASILY gets to 106 degrees. Thats only 8 degrees above our body temps, do you really think something that can burn YOU and YOUR skin is less then 8 degrees hotter then you?

Booooooooooooooooooo
