Low humidity
    #3649990 - 01/19/05 08:43 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I recently finished constructing my terrarium. It consits of a green tupperware container spray painted black on the inside to stop light leaks, a 12 inch 6 watt fluro mounted inside to the lid, a 4 way adjustable heating pad, and 2 inches of perlite with 1/2 inch of water for humidification.

I purchased a vicks "comfort meter" which is really just a therm/hydro meter sans min/max readings. It cost $11.98 at meijer, the heating pad was also $12. The terrarium is sitting on the heating pad which right now is set on "medium-high" the third highest setting. Right now the meter is reading 83 degrees f and 84% RH. When I open the container to check the readings the heat and dampness just hit me. It really feels like its at 100% RH but the meter just wont budge from 84%. Is it very likely that this cheap meter is just off? The container is fairly well sealed, and like I said it looks and feels as if its at 100%. What do you guys think?

Thanks

try setting up the meter somewhere else, for example somewhere where you know it is 100% or 0% humidity and try calibrating it

Yes.

However, 83 degrees F. is a bit high for a fruiting chamber...
Cubensis will fruit even at these temperatures (I have fruited them in the 90's), but you will have less than ideal growth...

theres a tek for calibrating your hygrometer here

That only calibrates the meter to 75%. Calibration has squat to do with making your hygrometer read more...only making it read accuratly. And only at 75%. It really is a mostly useless tek in our hobby.

I calibrated my cheapo hydro meter. It was was one percentage point low. So the highest it will read in my terrarium is 86 rh. It really seems like the humid is 100%. There is condesation all over the inside, and when I open the lid the moisture just hits you. Im thinking it probably cant read higher than 85%. The temp is a steady 80 degrees f, with warmth being provided by a heating pad set on the lowest setting.

I was just trying to rule out having an inaccurate hygro.

temp fluctuation will cause a bunch of condensation, if its definitely one steady temp and you get condensation besides what youre misting, I think you are right where you need to be.

That tek doesnt do that though because it only checks accuracy at 75% rh....no where else and we NEVER should have the meter below 80 in a fruiting chamber so thats pretty pointless. It can be perfect at 75% and then not go above 85%. 90% of hygrometers will actually.
