Using Spawn bags instead of Jars.

I have used jars before, but really thought the spawn bags are way better, since you can sterilize a large bag that can act as a casing layer and eliminate the process of casing.
I am preparing a BRF for the bags and wanted to use an impulse sealer to seal the bags prior to sterilization. I am not sure if this is a good idea, but I have seen a 50/50 spilt of not sealing before and sealing before. For instance the sporeworks rye bag tech states to use a clothes pin at the top and seal later, while some other tech I read had sealing the bags before.
As well, I don't see any growing guides or I haven't looked hard enough I suppose, that use spawn bags vs. jars.

uh, no.
Sealing the bags wouldnt allow gas exchange, put a filter on the bag.

No, the bags already have a patch that allows gas exchange. I tried sealing the bags before the pressure cooker, it works fine.

jeppa, it will work, there is a reason spawnbags are also called FILTERPATCH-BAGS.
youll be just fine. you can wait till the substrate is 100% colonised and let it sit in indirect light to trigger fruiting, or you can cut open the bag and apply a casing layer in order to get a better yield. youll need a chamber to put it in if you decide to cut it open. peace ohm

The bag doesnt act as a casing layer but you can fruit it inside the bag invitro...you can do the same for jars though too.

If you can use the bag for spawn, it works pretty well. You can control the amount of grain that you add to the bag so you can end up with whatever amount of mycelia you need. Find out exactly how much spawn works best for the trays that you usually use and start making bags like this. Then you'll know that 1 bag = 1 tray of X dimensions that yields Y, thus 1 bag = Z amount of shrooms, when spawned.

I was just going to tape up the bottom of the bags with duct tape or similar and place the bags with the top chopped off it the terrarium. I don't see the reason for trays, unless the particular species needs a casing layer of additional materials... but I guess you could just add that to these bags.
The large bags are so big, that when fully filled it takes up the capacity of my small pressure cooker. I just got a used one for 40 bucks off some dood locally. I thought it was huge when I got it, but in retrospect I guess the circumference is the key factor in the pressure cooker being large.
I assume I could only place 2 medium bags in my pressure cooker as currently only one large one fits.

yes but if you use equal amounts of jars to equal a bag which one would produce a larger yeild of flush? which one would be more efficient? would the bag take longer to colonize, and would it be worth the wait...cause i can do almost any amount of jars in 3-4 weeks!!

veeeeeery unlikely that youl have a store carrying mycological products. you can get them at the sponsors, such as sporeworks.com or mycobag.com and alike. peace ohm

www.mycobag.com has filterpatch bags. You may want to do a search on eBay for "mycobag". To do it right you'll need an impulse sealer. The cheapest impulse sealers that I've ever heard of is available at www.harborfrieght.com . They have retail stores in many major cities or you can buy online.

Wow, Mycosupply sells the same impulse sealer for 3 times the price. Now thats a nice profit margin.

Actually, if you don't mind the slight hassle of eBay, there's some righteous deals on impulse sealers there. (eBay's almost always worth a look when you're shopping online...)

you can use closepins to keep ur bags shut. Or cheap thin wire. Get a hangar and some pliers. Now you don't have to cut the bag to open it and you can reuse them again.

have you ever actually fruited off of grain bricked in a quart jar?!
there are 2 things that suck about it; getting the block out of the jar when your done and the pathetic yields. i suspect the latter can be attributed to both surface area and air exchange. bags offer much greater surface area and way more air exchange for in-vitro.
jars are great for low overhead. i have jars from the 1960's that i have used dozens of times and expect dozens more uses.
