Finished reading the Qur'an
    #3649836 - 01/19/05 08:08 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I have finally finished the Qur'an, after months of reading this, I have finally finished and here is what I have to say: It is very similar to the Torah and the Bible. All of the stories are the same, everything is the same. It even talks about Jesus, Noah, Moses, Joseph, the Pharoah and countless others. Now, I have read the Bible and parts of the Torah, and to it seems that the Qur'an is much more strict. I might be wrong but it ALWAYS talks about fear of Allah(God) and always talks about not having mercy for the "Unbeliviers. But the wierd thing is that it also talks about acceptance of other people and then it goes back to murder and slaughter. I'll have to read this again after I read another that I have started. PACE

As I understand it, the Qur'an got more intolerant as Mohammed's conquests grew. His earliest writtings were ok, but as he started gaining more power he started preaching the death to infidels stuff to help him with his campaigns.

The Qur'an has a very close parrallel: The Book of Mormon. Both are essentially politicaly adapted rewrites of the Bible, taken down by an alleged prophet who was to save true believers from the apostate churchs. Interestingly enough, both Mohammed and Joseph Smith had their own city states, private armies and a plurality of wives. Joseph Smith's writings were heavily influenced by popular culture of the early 1800s in America so they are very America-centric, and less violent than Mohammed. Joseph Smith's militia was also less effective than Mohammed army. Mohammed's writings were very Arab-centric and were also very much a product of his times as well.

I suggest a more elaborated interpretation by Yusuf Ali, which continues with the context of most ayats.

The Qur'an is beautiful. Even the most mundane or exoteric verses bring me to tears in their Arabic recitation. God is beautiful.

Very perceptive. I have noted the similarity myself before.

I read the one by Yusuf Ali. I got it for free too. I just ordered a copy of the Bible because I have the king james version and I'm not sure if it's original. And I also ordered The Book of Mormon. I'm also checking out a ton of books off Amazon, been reading tons of shit non stop.

FYI the most 'accurate' Bible made today is the New Revised Standard Version . It has TONS of footnotes and apocrypha.
