Second Canadian Wal-Mart Store Gets Union

Second Canadian Wal-Mart Store Gets Union

Wed Jan 19,11:12 AM ET Business - AP

TORONTO - A second Wal-Mart store in Quebec received union certification after a majority of the store's employees signed cards indicating the Canadian arm of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union was their official agent for collective bargaining, the union said Wednesday.

The union and Wal-Mart Canada, a unit of retailing giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc., already are negotiating a contract for another store in Jonquiere, Quebec.

That store, which Wal-Mart revealed hasn't been profitable since it opened a few years ago, was automatically certified in August.

Wal-Mart Canada spokesman Andrew Pelletier said the company is reviewing all its options, including a legal challenge to the decision by the Quebec Labour Relations Commission that certified the union after the majority of the 200 employees of the store in the town of Saint Hyacinthe signed union cards.

Pelletier said that while Wal-Mart respects the laws and legal process in Quebec, he called the decision to automatically certify the store "undemocratic."

"Once again, we have a situation where our Quebec associates were not given the opportunity to express their views about the union in a democratic, secret-ballot vote. Instead, the union has been automatically certified at the Saint Hyacinthe store without a vote," he told Dow Jones Newswires.

"This concerns us because we believe the only way to ensure associates can express their views without coercion or intimidation is by allowing a secret-ballot vote to take place," he said.

He noted that employees at two stores in Saskatchewan have hired a lawyer and brought formal charges against the UFCW, alleging they were coerced into signing union cards.

"These matters are currently before the Saskatchewan Labour Board and seem to indicate that, from the associates' standpoint, these card-based certifications can be open to serious abuse," he said.

The UFCW said it plans to deliver a contract proposal to Wal-Mart in the next few weeks.

As for the Jonquiere store, an arbitrator was appointed at Wal-Mart's request in December, and meeting dates have been scheduled through March 15.

"The momentum is picking up," said Michael Fraser, UFCW Canada's national director, in a prepared statement. He added that Wal-Mart workers now realize that if they want a union in their store, Wal-Mart can't stop them.

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer, with more than 4,800 stores and 2004 sales of $256 billion.

Heh, too bad thier paychecks get raped by the Canadian government and they end up having to stand in line for 12+ hours for medical treatment.  I dont see the point of a union if they have no power to secure a medical plan and have to submit to all of Canada's taxes and income laws.  Now they have to pay union dues on top of it, lol.  This is just another thing the Canadian's have to bend over for because the people in charge know they will.. but they are doing it for the "little guy".

Whatever man, I'm Canadian, and I've been to the emergency room a few times, and I've always been taken care of within an hour by doctors who did an excellent job.

It's not a question of having to stand in line for 12+ hours at an emergency room in a Canadian hospital. Canadian emergency rooms are roughly on a par with American ones. It's having to wait 12+ weeks to get an appointment with a specialist, then 12+ weeks to get the tests done, then 12+ days to get the results of the tests, then 12+ months to get the surgery done.

Think I'm exaggerating? I'm not. Every one of the above figures has been proven, in study after study -- funded by Canadian taxpayer dollars. And what makes it worse is that in every case where I use the figure "12+", I am being exceedingly generous. In actual fact, the numbers for almost every single step in the chain listed above read more like "17+".

Here's a little tidbit -- there are more MRI machines in the city of Philadelphia than there are in all of Canada.

I'm not sure if that paints a completely accurate picture of the situation in Canada. My uncle was diagnosed with cancer about 6 months ago, and has been through 3 or 4 different treatments already.

Where did you get the info on the MRI machines in Philadelphia? Are they all for medical use, and available to the public?

Also, what kind of health care are you getting in the US if you're on an HMO?

I have never understood the rationale of defending the US healthcare system by beating up on some other country's system. It's not terribly constructive. The fact of the matter is there have been numerous healthcare proposals recently and only some few are without merit. There are other options that implimenting exactly <insert other country here>'s healthcare system.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

not mutually exclusive, but very closely tied. you have to admit there is a lot of money in the health care system
socailism or capitalism life to some extent is about money

The US probably has the best health care system in the world. You most certainly are not screwed if you don't have health insurance. You can buy the best health care there is. You can pay for it. With your own money. Or you can pay for your own health insurance. Or do you think you should be given it. Get a job, go to work and buy your own shit. I'm not buying you anything. Wear a rubber, don't smoke (anything), don't drink alcohol, don't eat bad food, don't indulge in risky behaviour and you can probably keep your health care costs very low. I, on the other hand, pay for my own insurance and thus feel completely free to ignore all of these proscriptions, which the government could reasonably demand if they are responsible for your medical care.

Support yourself and stay off the government titty.
