First thing, DON'T MIX THE TWO STRAINS IN THE SAME CASING. ahem. The contam risk is just as great as with a smaller casing, just make sure the humidity isn't too high, the temp isn't too high or low, and make sure there is enough air exchange. All these are what keep mycelium strong enough to fight off the contamination. Keep the substrate layer around 1.5 inches thick, the more surface area the better. If your lucky, and everything is growing evenly, you will have fairly uniform flushes and alot of mushrooms. This way would definately save space. I say go for it.

i have really noticed a difference in doing this, except i make them in 22" long seedling casing trays ($7 at lowes) each one can hold anywhere from 7-10 caked (depends on how you stretch) and this method seems to produce huge flushes, not like little one panners, that dry up into nothing... you should try it, but i don't suggest using the bottom of a cooler, get a bigger tray. and yes... definetly don't mix strains. -Ko!-

jnykiel- use it as spawn for horse this will increase your yields. i would personally reccomend Tennessee Stud Substrates if you can't find a source of h poo. <no concern w/ odor. you can also get the pre-pasturized sub. is as simple as 123 when using it. the basic sub is the best buy, if you have means to pasturize it. this, agar's pictorial, is what i use.

That is beautiful oatman, just beautiful. I may try that instead of the pans I got. Can you give us the details of that grow? Grain? How many quart/pints needed to fill that thing, casing layer, etc....:)

If you dont listen to the poo advise...
I would make 4 casings, 2 of each strain. Never mix strains so at least 2 casings. You dont want to put all your eggs into one basket, but you want to make sure you have a nice big solid network for fruiting. 6 jars per casing, in any container that is lightproof on the sides, make sure the substrate is 1 3/4-2 inches thick. Case with peat/verm/oystershell or coir/verm/oystershell if you can.
