how long in freezing temps till casings die?

My friend has a converted freezer on his back porch. He keeps it heated with light bulbs rigged up to a thermostat. But he just found that he temporarily lost power and the temps dropped to 23f. It could have been that cold for up to 9 hours. he had 10 casings in there,1 1/2" thick in aluminum bread pans.
Are his casings dead or can they survive a freeze like that?
I've read that 106 hot is thermal death, but cant find much on cold death.
My friend would be very thankfull for any knowledge you guys can offer.

actually when i began cultivating i forgot 3 casings in the fridge for about a day or two.
they happened to be VERY close to the freezer and when i took them out i saw ice crystals all over them. i thought i had killed them, but eventually they fruited real nice!
guess i was kinda lucky on that one. wish u some luck there man. peace ohm

You are not the only one...I've done it to at least a dozen casings and I've heard of a dozen others telling of it happening to them, all survival stories as well...not really luck...just strong organism.

Personally, I haven't froze any. But it is a fact, even in nature, the cold doesn't kill myc., the heat does.

my's just as a mushroom about 90%+ water. if you go to freezing temps, cells will rupture b/c of the expansion of the water hich can lead to death of the mycelium.
actually, as i write these lins, i just come to think of how deep freeze actually works? .. wont the cells pop up aswell?
im seriously confused now. peace ohm

Hmmm, interesting point. I was under the assumtion that myc. could withstand excessive cold, but would die at like 105 F. I'll go check it out. K, here we go: clicky It seems that myc. will go to 106. And as low as 0 F. (I would call that an estimate)

Thanks to all of you. my friend is very relieved. Although the temps are still only up to 60 deg. He now has hope.

that would be the temp when atoms stop vibrating, correct? peace ohm

Many mushrooms living in climates where it can be very cold in winter. Fly agaric, azurescens, liberty cap, ps. cyanescens and many many many many many many many more.
Does not say that ps. cubensis survives cold winters, but to say that the expanding water will kill the myc is not perse true.

Substrate is not 90% water, mushrooms are. You can freeze cakes/casings without turning them to mush, unlike mushrooms.
