PC my casing mix?

I know that a pf cake, once 100%, is pretty resistant to contams. Is it necessary to pc my casing mix for my rye? Is the rye just as resistant as the pf cake? And isnt my casing mix sterile to begin with? As long as I don't play ball with it, it should be sterile enough to keep my rye clean, right?
I have a small as PC and its gonna take years to PC all the coir and verm Im gonna use. The damn coir fluffs way the hell up!

AFOAF read of people that microwave their casing mixes for 5 min, stir, then 5 more min. Afoaf is gonna make his first casing mix tom. and is just going to nuke it (he has small pc as well, but mostly just lazy..mostly).

it'd be easiest if you just moisten the casing material and put it in the microwave for 5 minutes, works good for me

Nah, don't sweat it. If you're really concerned about it, you can microwave your casing mixture for 5 minutes in a tupperware container. Stir 2.5 minutes into microwave cycle.
I quit sterilizing casing mixtures long ago myself, and haven't encountered any contams in years (literally).

Girls aren't worth it, just stick to growing shrooms...way more fun!

hey, IS the rye just as resistant to contams as a fully colonized pf cake? Could a guy make a cake out of rye if he were to incubate in a 1/2 pt or pt jar? that would be less time and easy for the newbs like myself right?

No. The kernels are slightly more prone to contamination, especially if the starchy interior is exposed, or not colonized fully.
A grain cake will not fruit well, if at all (my experience yielded very pathetic results). It either should be cased, or used as spawn.
Make a new thread next time, this is about PC'ng casing mixes...

Sitting on perlite I can understand yields like that. The main drawback to grain cakes is the lack of moisture content. If you case it (even if it is this new dunk n roll and double ended teks), yields will improve.
^^^ That is an example of a grain cake on a good day. Similar, if not better yeilds would be obtained through casing it.

Definatly better yeilds casing...it was done just to see if it could be and I did four like that. Only cakes I ever did...
They were also dunked and rolled and kept in a humidified closet along with sitting on perlite just for a little kick. I imagine if you made them with a little verm mixed in that would help.
Its not really any easier to deal with the cakes then to just case it if your going to use whole grains though..
