dry cakes?

afoaf is on his first grow...his cakes are mostly complete...the slowest one is over 90% colonized and a few have been birthed or are being dunked at the moment. all the cakes were innoc'ed on dec. 24 and kept incubated, he peeked in on them a lot and the temp flucuated between 84 & 87F...figured thats why they've taken a while...
the question is, can a cake dry out and stall or even die? he broke up and examined one of the cakes inside a bag and then added fresh sterilzed substrate in an attempt to increase yield... he said that the cake seemed kind of dry and was somewhat worried about it...
thanks!

If you dunked them they should be OK.

That dosent sound like a good idea. Was he going to let it collonize again?

yes, the bag is back in the incubator to attempt to colonize...he said he knew it was risky, but wanted to give it a try anyways...if it works he'd turn 1 colinized jar into 5 jars, similar to a g2g idea...
also, he's got one cake that was birthed 3 days ago..prior to birth it was dunked for about 18 hrs. he then rolled and double end cased it and put it in a large (roughly 80oz) well cleaned jar. the setup is similar to the chronic tek. its currently under about 16hrs of light per day. he's been asking me to get an idea when he could expect some pins but i've had difficulty finding info on that, what is an average range? i told him 2 weeks just to get him off my back about it...

You should see pins within 10 days of placing in the fruiting chamber. As long as the temp(70-75F) and humidity(90-95%) are right. If either one of those are off they will take longer
