Casing ?
    #364329 - 07/31/01 07:19 PM (23 years, 4 months ago)

Hi all,

In a dream: It's been 3 wks since cased some cubies on rye. Casing was as follows: layer of damp perlite, substrate, and 1-1.5 in of coco on top. Coco not sterilized since came in brick form. Covered with alum foil and place in box. Opened foil every now and then to check and mist. Growth never showed through. Temp 70-80. Moisture of coco damp but not overly wet.

Now contam. Try to fight it but losing battle. What a waste of time.

? what did i do wrong? Should i have sterilized coco? Should i have used thinner casing layer? Should i cover it with foil or leave it open in terrarium? Should i let light hit it? What can i do to speed up colonization even if it means less fruit or flushes? any replies be appreciated.

Thanks,
newman

What brand did you use? Some brands have anti fungals in them, Gro-brick does not.

Anytime you have an opportunity STERILIZE! Re-hydrating your coco fiber and nuking it in the micro for 10-15 minutes is far better than no sterilization at all. A pressure cooker will always ensure a sterile medium. If your casing seems lost, then you have nothing else to loose. Take a razor blade and remove the casing layer. Use a paper towel with 91% alcohol to repeatedly clean the razor blade. Remove the casing layer down until tyou get nothing but colonized coco fiber. Try not to cut into the cakes and try not to touch the contam. Give it a sprinkling of moist verm (preferably sterile) and place under a light regimen. Coco fiber and verm can be nuked like this: Place the moist medium in a microwavable tupperware, put the lid on leaving one corner cracked. Put it in the micro for 10 minutes on high. As soon as the time is done, reach in and close the lid (careful of the heat). It will start to draw a vacuum as the air inside cools off. Place the tupperware in a clean draft free area to cool. Once cool, you may need to mist to add some moisture back. Squeeze out coco fiber and apply or with verm, just sprinkle the wettish medium on top. If it is a little too wet, allow it to evaporate some before misting. Over-squeezing verm will break up the pieces and reduce the moisture holding ability
