How do you do a second flush with vermiculite and brown rice cakes?

have you cased with the verm? if so, basically all you need to do is clean off the first flush shrooms, keep the humidity at an acceptable level. the pins of the second flush should already be apparent. if not, you might want to raise the humidity a little bit. good luck.

what do you mean by cased? Sorry I am very new still. What is happening is that I got some shrooms from each cake. Now some of the original pinheads aren't growing. Should I pick them all off and hope for new growth?

if they are obviously not growing anymore (if they started at the same time as the ones that you have already picked, and have not matured) then pickthem. if they stop growing, you will notice that they don't look as healthy or vibrant as the ones that have grown. however, if they are not blackened, or slimy, they make for very good eatin.... good luck.

Flpntwst- What you are experiencing is, in my opinion, a possible dry cake. After a cake gives 'birth' sometimes it needs a drink. Especially if it was not humid enough in your terrarium. I suggest boosting humidity. You could add more perlite, or add more water, or a H2O2 (2% peroxide + water) mix to give them the added wetness. I dont suggest adding water directly to cake, not for a Youngin' as yourself. Oh, and dont forget a good misting each day. One fans at least 3x a day, or you should be anyway, so far as I know. A good spritz in the tank may help with humidity. But first, pick your cake totally clean. Aborts, or shroom dwarves/pinheads may iniate contams if left on the cake too long. When someone refers to 'Casing' it is another method of growing shrooms, using a microclimate, such as a cowpie would be in nature. Since no one want a stinking pile of shit in their house, they make ones out of peatmoss and/or vermiculite. Plenty of posts on how and why to case. Do a 'SEARCH' I suggest, if your cakes are cleaned and refreshed, and still wont pin, Case them. Thats what my friends do, if they start with cakes. Its like geting more bang for your buck. Hope it helps. -DCC

Okay one of the cakes has some brown fuzz growing on it now. Should I throw it out now?

I'd say toss it. However, if you think you're up to it, and the brown fuzz is small enoung, try cutting it out and pressing a red-hot nail head against the cut area. This doesn't always work but it may be worth a try as I've saved a few cakes using that method. Make sure you spray the cake with H2O2 after handling it as well. peace, -uniboner
