Lowest temp for mycelium?
    #3639897 - 01/17/05 06:35 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Does anyone here have any info or experience with the lowest temp mycelium can be stored at? Could it survive sub-freezing temps for a day or so and then be reintroduced to it's optimum temp and still be healthy? I have seen that thermal death ocfcurs at about 106 but haven't had any luck finding anything about opposite temps. ANy advice would be greatly apreciated.

I believe I've read that you could freeze mycelium in your freezer than thaw it out though I'm sure its not healthy. Don't quote me on that though.

Cubies will not survive a prolonged hard freeze (subzero) I'm pretty sure. They will survive light freezes if not prolonged for sure. Now understand they store cultures in liquid nitrogen (-450F.) but for the most part all metaboloic activity has been halted.

Dried mycelium can be frozen to at least below -10 C (14 F) and revived, in my experience.

For non-dried, look at this thread, especially the spreadsheet: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1

in the mushroom cultivator is stated that at 2-4C the mycelium more or
less stops to reproduce its cells, well it doesnt really stop but its
hardly noticeable anymore.

this would be a very good temperature to for long term culture storage.
gotta love tmc
peace ohm :mushroom2:

Cellular degeneration is still a real concern, thats why they deep freeze (-450F.) cultures to stop all metabolic activity not just cell reproduction.

for the average home cultivator deep freeze wouldnt be an option
whereas refrigerating is - right?

i dont happen to have liquid nitrogen for deep freezing in my
house, but a fridge for sure

You missed the point ohm. Myc will not survive years in the fridge degeneration will start the minute you harvest. The liquid nitrogen reference was for those who would say "well they deep freeze no problem so there nani nani boo boo!" And I'll tell you there are plenty out there! Cubies would grow not only north of the Mason-Dixon line but they would grow throughout the USA and Canada if freezing wasn't an issue  Enough said, GL guys
