need spore print to tell you which kind of mushroom that is...

If the spore print is black its a Panaeolus Subbalteatus which is an active.

If the spore print is brown its Panaeolina Foenisecii, which is not active.

The stems are thick, but I'm betting the spore print will turn out brown. Pan subbs are rare in lawns.

Thanks for your interest
I'm taking a spore-print right now. I lifted it up to look at it and i think its either darkish-brown, or black...it was hard to tell, as not many spores had been printed. I didn't think there was a chance that they were actives, and they probably aren't. But i will post more pics tomorrow.

If the print is dark brown, it's some species of Panaeolina, all of which are inactive.

This pic I made might help you decide which they are:

wow gumby thats very imformative to n00bs, i like that print chart. I'm writing a psilocybe field guide for santa cruz hunters, since i have alot of dumb friends who eat random mushrooms and im not always there to ID them. can i use that as a way to ID pan subbs in my book? ill even give you full credit for it.

Thanks for that chart, Gumby. The spore print i took wasn't as clear as any of those. I don't believe these are Subs, so i probably wont take another print. Thanks for teh info.

Don't give up so soon. I think they are probably subs. Just wait for more to come up, print them immediately under a class so the air doesn't blow the spores away, wait a few hours then post another picture of the print. In the mean time, save the ones you have in case a later flush yields a positive ID. You may want to dry them, though i think drying wild mushrooms may effect potency considerably and subs are only moderately potent at best.
good luck

There would be no point in eating them. With subbs you need 4-6 grams for a decent trip. I normally wait untill I've collected/dried ~150 of them before I dose.

Gumby is close to right about the doasage, yet they are basically as potent as cubes by fresh weight. One ounce or more. Cubes also one ounce fresh. Dried 3-6 grams and Gumby said four to six grams dried.

Rare in lawns but they do grow sometimes. Right now it is cold here but has warmed up today. Riding stables and race tracks are great places to hunt for Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Thats black ! So.....i guess it is a sub. Good find for me. Its the first active mushroom i've found. I got some good size patches in my yard. Probably only about 10 total. I will probably dry them and wait and see if more grow. Thanks for your advice and time.

Cool finds, could you possibly get a shot of them in their natural habitat?

I would eat them all fresh for a nice experience.

i was looking through a Visual Identification Guide that i made a while ago....and its very possible that the mushrooms i have are Panaeolina Foenisecii.
http://www.uoguelph.ca/~gbarron/GILL%20FUNGI/DARK/panaeoli.htm
here is a site i looked up quickly on google about Panaeolina Foenisecii
Anyone agree ?
