brian eno question
    #3639172 - 01/17/05 03:31 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

hey folks. I really enjoy brian eno's music. well some will know his earlier works which ae not ambient but like really different music with vocls and guitars etc.
then you look at his releases that are some of the best ambient works ever done. do any of you know what made a difference in brian eno that made him go this way musically? anyone know if there was a major event that triggered this?

I don't think so. He did the four albums of songs, Taking Tiger Mountain, Here Come the Warm Jets, Before and After Science, Another Green World, and then he did a lot of producing and the ambient stuff. After that he did an album with David Byrne called My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and one with John Cale called Wrong Way Up, both great. Don't know what else. Don't believe there was any event, just the natural evolution of a truly brilliant and creative artist.

I think he started out with all these great songs and ideas and made these great albums (Here Come The Warm Jets is my fave). But while he was recording these he started to get interested in the technical production side of things, ie. tape manipulation, echo, looping, synthesizers, etc. and this led to the ambient, which was a strange new type of music, and then he even wanted to bounce these ideas off of other talented individuals. Just my thoughts. Peace!

if there was a major event that triggered this
a car accident

no, really... in short: eno got hit by car (not that seriously, so i guess the event was not that 'major') and was lying on his bed in his apartment when a friend came over (don't remember the name, but i think she was involved in the punk scene later) and eno asked her to put some music on since he was unable to leave the bed. she did and then she left. the music however was not loud enough, but poor eno could not leave the bed to turn it up. so he was forced to listen to music with really low volume while all these other sounds were coming from the environment... so he came up with 'ambient'...

a friend came to his apartment and introduced him with lsd?
i'm sure he was into lsd before ambient sessions too

http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/e/eno_brian/ambient-series.shtml

"Eno's ambient ideal was formed in 1975 during months of lying in a hospital bed recovering from a car accident, forced to listen to too-quiet 18th century harp music that his body cast prevented him from turning up. This alerted him to the way that recorded sound can effectively merge with the environment in which it's played, appealing to "many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular." He aimed to create a cocoon for thought and reflection through a music that could be used with utilitarian purpose. He has described the process as a painter taking the human figure out of a landscape. In music, this figure took the form of his own voice, a cohesive melody, and other evidence of human intervention-- by eliminating these, he created a sense of space where there was once an object."

Another Green World is my favorite Eno album, but the Ambient albums are awesome too.

thanks for all the info, that answers my question.
I prefer his ambient stuff, but also like his older stuff.
