Quick spawn bag question
    #3635756 - 01/16/05 05:23 PM (20 years, 4 days ago)

Ok, Im looking at "Large Autoclavable Gusseted Bulk Spawn Bags w/ Self-Healing Injector Sites" from Sporeworks.com, they are 18"x8"x5" and are priced at $20 for 10 bags. Can I sterilize my whole grain substrate in these bags with a pressure cooker or will the bags melt? How about pasturizing in an oven? Thanks.

Since it says "Autoclavable" it should withstand the temperatures in your pressure cooker...
I suggest that you simply cut out a bit from the top of one of your bag and put in your pressure cooker and try.

Good luck.

Those bags are made to put in pressure cookers, go for it. Don't let the bags touch the bottom of the pc directly, use the standoff plate. I had a couple stick to the side of the pc, but that was my fault for not turning down the temp after reaching 15 psi, live and learn. Also, the medium bags are made out of thicker poly than the large bags and feel more study to me, you'd be suprised how much will fit in the medium bags too.
