Pine needles may be too acidic for our little mushrooms.  They are one of the best sources of vitamin C in a pine forest   Plus most pine tree sap has anti-fungal properties, so the needles may exibit some of this anti-fungal activity aswell.

I don't care about jack shit, I just wanna pick my nose!!!

i'll give pine needles and the mulch a try anyways. these are dead and brown, they can't have that much acid in them!

Wouldn't it take a fair bit of maintenance to keep it moist? I was thinking about it as a casing material today but when i go out hunting after rain it's always the first thing that's bone dry. Maybe making up a mixture?

I don't think it'll help your cubensis. They usually grow on dung, not pine needles.

And if you are growing a wood-loving specie, I don't hold up to much hope either. I've never seen Ps. cyanescens growing on pine needles. Alder chips, yes. Dried blackberry stalk, yes. But pine needles? No!

Give it a shot and let us know of your results!
