Real Temp issues
    #3638645 - 01/17/05 11:39 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Help! It is winter, it is cold, the closet i keep my terrariums in is cold. I have one on a heating pad, but it doesnt raise the temp verymuch. I know they should be around 75 degrees F. But they are between 60-65 acording to my cheap gauge. I was thinking about getting an electric blanket and putting it on the floor and the Terariums on top. Any suggestions?
How will these temperatures effect growth? Is 60-65 very detrimental? When i put the lights on it spikes the temperatures, is temp fluctuation up and down a bad thing? Help!

That's too low really, do you have enough cash for an aquarium heater? Tub-in-Tub should solve your temp problems, look into making one...very easy.

The temperature in my house is never over 60. I use a TnT with an aquarium heater and it easily holds the temp at 80.5. If I can build it, ANYONE can build it.

I'm just wondering how people who use closets keep the wood from getting soggy, because it gets really thick in there when you're pushing 80+rh. I too have temp probs with mine, it's usually at 50deg or less ambient. I'm thinking of giving this incubator style trick a try instead of using lights and a warm mist.

Line closet with plastic. Big rolls at Home/Depot & Lowes, for cheap.

I tried that the first time and it seemed messy. Hard to seal the joints. I resurfaced mine with this masonite type board that was dark brown on the back and painted with a hard white gloss on the front and was advertized as moisture and mildew resistant. I'd rather have ~proof but we'll see how it handles the rh.

That should work - FINE.

Cough.... my foaf's "closet" room was 8X8X24 foot . He used 6 mill black plastic. At joints he overlapped 1 foot. Used thin plastic corner molding (cheap) & screws to hold plastic in place tight. Worked GREAT.

JMO I like more permanent durable surfaces. I have a habit of making it complicated(expensive).

Closets lined with plastic are quite durable. I used clear plastic....

Next time though I'm going for a tarp...one really big friggen peice so theres no seams this time....

My heating pad works great for colonization, it keeps my tank between 84 and 90. I have to keep an eye on it but now i have to turn it on and off to try and get my cases to pin. If i leave it off it can get down to like 68. should I leave it at 68 or should i keep doing what i'm doing and trying to regulate it at about 75?
