preparing millet spawnbags soak/simmer ...
    #3638226 - 01/17/05 11:45 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

hey there!

so im preparing a millet spawnbag for the first time now.
as i used the be the rye man, im fairly new to millet but since its going
to be used as spawn its just the choice.

allright i read what i could and came across a certain thing that made
me think quite a bit.

grains that are going to be used as spawn for inoculation of whatever
substrate, are meant to be slightly 'dryer' than grains that are meant
to be directly cased and fruited b/c they will have to be mixed (broken apart) with
the substrate evenly and shouldnt form big fat hunks of grain sticking together.

source fucknuckle's post:
Quote:

But if you are using it for spawn then a simmer should not be done. As skipping the simmer leaves the grain whole and easy to break apart after full colinization

source fungifun.org:
Quote:

The grain used for spawn should look a bit drier, but still moist, and have less exploded kernels.

right now the millet is being soaked and occassionally stirred with a spoon
every few hours to get the kernels on the ground up aswell.

concerning the use of the millet as spawn, should one actually simmer
it after the 24h soak?

i know that simmering hydrates the spawn to the fullest, but that
spawn is also more likely to 'mash up' when being kneaded in the bag
to even distribute the colonised kernels - also, once layed out to
the substrate one is spawning to, simmered grain can be more difficult
to seperate into individual kernels without mashing.

so, would the 24h soaking be sufficiant or shall one simmer no matter what?

oh and i nearly forgot, the bags are going to be inoculated with agar
wedges - just to have it all said.

Soak should do ya fine. Straight millet does not absorb as well as rye, or even mix of WBS. Also, simmer of straight millet will turn to mush - FAST.

You just have to deal with that delicate balance. That is why I prefer WBS spawn, over straight millet, because you have a mix of seed/grain, some of which soaks up more, some less & creates a good balance. Once it's soaked enough to expand about 20%, it is about foolproof, IMHO.

no, there will be plenty of moisture from a 24hr soak.

allright, so it seems just as if the 24h soak will be sufficiant,
no simmer needed.
but as it simply had to be, something happend.

by the time tomorrow when it will actually be 24h soaking time,
i will not be at home due to university stuff i have to do.
a 30 hour soak shouldnt be tooo bad, shall it?
or could i already encounter
sprouting of the millet?

the room is quite chilly actually 16C/65F and i could even lower the
temp after 24hrs if that would be important in order to prevent sprouting of the millet.

65F & 30 hours should not get you sprouts. Almost, but NOT.

I had some millet recently and as AGAR says it mushes very fast. After 1,5 hour PC much millet was mushed. I did not even simmer.

as said and before that a 20 hours soak, I mixed it with wbs prior to PC-ing so the colonisation wasnt a big problem after all.

So 20h soak, 90 minutes PC, much mush... :p

I never used simmering I use ratios and I had some sprouting from my whole batch of millet this last time...don't ask me how this is possible but it happened...luckily the casing I consider the most important had the least...and I just pluck em out...not realy too annoying but I have no idea why I had sprouting...I use white millet and pc for 1:12

allright, well, ill use it as it seems at 30hr soaking time.
i got to say that i am not too positive about this thing,
as i am used to saturating the kernels,
but well all you people say it will work .. so it should.

If your worried about lack of water adding verm to your WBS/millet could help you out alot.

actually what i am worried about is that the bag may somehow dry
out before it is fully colonised.

since from kicking a few wedges in there till 100% we can say about
a month time, so im kinda worried about it surviving in there and
getting colonised fully - get me?

2 qt = 610 millet / 350 water

2 lt = 700 millet / 400 water

1 qt = 305 millet / 175 water

1 lt = 350 millet / 200 water

I made up this lil data sheet a while back so I never forget the amounts I need for diff size jars

allright guys.

its been around 18 hours soaking of the grain now,
and i gotta tell ya, besides the outer shell of the millet,
which has softened, inside its still all dry.

i cane across some idea, that ill prepare 2 bags just as said in the tek,
by simply straining them and using - but 2 bags will get a 10 min
simmer, since i simply cannot think of wasing perfectly good
agar on some bags that may be too dry to fully colonise..
you get my point.

anyway, that's it - oh yeah, i had some discussion with doc34,
the nice dude with the wbs tek, he said his simmered and pcd millet
is just as easy to break apart as anything - sheesh dudes,
tough one

allright 4 bags were prepares.

2 of them recieved a low 15 mins simmer after the 18hrs soak,
2 didnt.

of the 2 that didnt, one was soaked in coffee water one in plain water.

all grains were throughoutly rinsed, strained for ~30/40 mins,
then loaded to bags and pc'd for 2 hours.

all bags will be inoculated using wedges from the same plate,
ill keep this updated to show / proove if the soaking alone
is really sufficiant for the whole content of the bag to get colonised
and if the coffee water addition gets any remarkable difference or not.
