draining a pillowcase. whens it ready?
    #3638156 - 01/17/05 11:17 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

yesterday i pasteurized some straw/poo/verm. i've had it on an oven rack dripping for about 18 hours, after pushing on the pillowcase there is still a decent amount of water dripping out... definately not ready to spawn yet correct?
if it already ready would an additional 12 hours draining hurt it?
i have it dripping into a rubbermaid and sitting atop of the oven rack is another rubbermaid, so its covered and not getting bacteria landing all over it.

Just gotta let it drain till it's right.

The problem you are having - is why my foaf only did pillow case & hot water ONCE. Big heavy bag, dripping poo juice is no fun to deal with.

He changed over to turkey and/or autoclave bag, in oven, with meat thermo in bag neck - to monitor temp.

That way, you can hydrate mix to squeeze & drip point, then oven pasturize in bag without much loss of moisture.

Easy to get moisture IN, hard to get it OUT, after hot water soak.

Keep on keeping on .....you will get there.

You could squeeze the water out.

And it is right when you take a handful of material into your hand and squeeze it, it barely drips. So it should be very moist, but not wet or even soaking wet.

the best hting to do when making poo verm/straw mixes imo is mix the requires to be stood on with wood or something to squeeze the water straw and poo in a pillow case and the poo in another...the straw/poo will drain out within a couple hours but poo often outta it...and you don't wnanabe sqeezin verm

I also like this so you don't have grind up dry poo if you dehydrate like I do...i take the poo put it in a bow and go over it with my hands working out all the chunks...then mix with th verm/ppp

oh and I also find blending(shreddin it when dry I mean) the straw works best...it lets you fit more makes colonize faster and theres no need to prety down

one last thing I do pasteurize the pillow cases together so I get all teh poo nutes into the straw and verm

LOL.....Roadzzzz just likes to squeeze them warm bags

The one time I did this, I took 2 wide plastic wrapped boards, nailed strap from one to the other, placed bag between the two & stood on one board to apply pressure. Not exactly the cleanest way to do it, but it's quicker.

lolzzz

I actually use an old Apple Press now...shove the wet poo in...damp poo comes out.
I got tired of squeezing the water out of my horse poo with my hands.
I know an old Apple Press is cheating...but I'm getting older now and look for easier ways to do things in my old age...lolzzz

This is what I used to do.
I'd let the bag of horse poo cool down in the sink...cause it was fricken too hot to mess with right after pasturizing.
Then I'd ring the fricken thing out like a wet t-shirt.
Let it sit in the sink for a couple more hours.
Then start grabbing hand fulls of poo and squeezing the living crap out of them...then putting the moist poo into my bulk containers.
Then spawn(mix) the colonized substrate(usually rye) in with the moist horse poo.
Cover the bulk container(usually a Rubbermaid)...and wait for colonization.

I'd use a double Rubbermaid with an Aquarium heater and water in the bottom Rubbermaid...and put the bulk grow Rubbermaid container on top of the other one.
Set it at 81 degrees F and it would colonize much faster.
