Heating pads
    #3637641 - 01/17/05 04:01 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I'm currently using a heating pad inside a dresser drawer for my incubator. Almost all of the heating pads I've seen have 4 buttons for 4 settings, low, medium-low, medium-high, and high. Mine is currently on the low setting. The 12 1/2 pint jars were all inoculated on friday the 14th and are siting directly on the heating pad. So far I dont seen any sign of spore germination. The temperature in the drawer is around 75 and the temp of the jars is around 78-80. I was curious what setting most of you use(for those that use heating pads)and how exactly you use said heating pad in your setup. I'm tempeted to kick it up to medium-low but am afraid of the temp going to high.

btw will exposing the jars to light delay germination?(I find myself peeking at the jars a few times a day)

yeah they'd do fine at that temp but 86 is were it's at. maybe put a clean towel/blanket over the pad and try raising it to med-low.

if you see no growth 4-5 days after inoculation than definitely raise the temps.
I have a feeling if low is 80 then med-low might be 90ish, use a buffer blanket. Since I grow mine in a terraium, I raise my cakes like 3" above the pad when incubating. If i have it on 45min and off 15min every hour all day long it reaches 86...30/30 might be good too. maybe 30/15 or 15/15 just play and see what works best.
(get a 15min interval timer for the pad, might be hard to find but it's great. Pads shouldn't be on longer than an hour, many have timers and shut off after an hour. I don't get those, that's silly. on 15 min and off 15min on med-low might be better for you 'cause they're so close...maybe use a buffer.)

also...when u check on them just turn the lights off and close the curtains maybe shade them behind something when u check 'em out. A few seconds of dim light won't really stall colonization much...some would disagree but...w/e there's prolly no noticeable difference

I like to use my pad when fruiting too. I put it in the perlite layer on 30/30 or 15on/45off just to increase humidity. 30/30 w/ a layer of perlite 1.5" on top w/ cakes on perlite raises temps to 80. That's good for my cambos but not all shrooms like to fruit at 80+ 15/45 would give good huidity and keep temps in lower 70s

Kick it up a notch!...BAM! (sorry had to do it :smirk:
78-80f will slow things down for sure. Don't be afraid to turn it up, and do as the other fellow said...use a blaket on top of the mat just for added security. I really wouldn't worry about any fire risks, but then again your on your own with that one.
As for the light.....just don't expose them to anything more then a few minute's while doing your daily/weekly checking.

don't be a dick!
