Vermculite Shortage ?
    #363615 - 07/30/01 02:20 PM (23 years, 2 months ago)

Hey all. I recently went out looking for a bag of vermiculite. I normally shop at wal-mart or winndixie for my needs. And I had to visit 55 wal-marts two k-marts, 2 home depots, and finally found it at a small halls nursery. Is there a reason for this? I used to find lots and lots of bags of vermiculite at any given wal-mart. I finally have a bag now but I wasjust wondering if this is any reason for this?

WalMart, along with most other national chain retailers, has pulled verm off the shelves. A few months back it was determined that one brand of verm contained traces of asbestos, a carcinogen (sp?). To save face in the public eye most national chains pulled all brands of verm to prevent the media from exploiting the scare. Most small nurserys and horticultural suppliers still carry it as it is a staple item in their industry.
