Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, Infected Mushroom, Moody Blues (especially Knights in White Satin, awesome tripping song.)

Just my experience, but that's the type of music I like anyway so I may be bias

In a cool, calm environment Shpongle and other psychedelic ambient and chill out music.

But what i like the most, the thing that really combines well and seems are tottaly made for each other is full on psy trance.
This stuff has the same rythm as your mind on acid. It is the audio version of LSD

hell yeah - Butthole Surfers, early (Syd's) Floyd - were you at my early trips or something??!!  (we used to combine the two plus a tad of Swans - remember them?)

I would add also (and this is something that I think fits perfectly with the insane 'speediness' of an LSD peak) a song called Mania by Throwing Muses - there is a live version that sounds like they are playing a million miles a second - THAT really used to hit the spot - over and over again until we HAD to take the record off because it was TOO FECKING MUCH!!!!  (but in a 'good' way!)

Listen to eyedea for good tripping rap.  Much more psychedelic then eminem.  It's great because Eyedea is one of those guys who revels in his insanity.  Really good thinking stuff.  He says the sort of stuff you need to hear while you are tripping.  For example, over a repeated phrase "And now the voice in your head is yours" he says:  "Take a deep breath, there is nothing to be afraid of, what you just did was fall into the depth of existence, the place your mind keeps you away from by its own process of building models for understanding.  This is not insanity, this is in fact the ultimate reality.  The union you have achieved is only possible in thoughts no more.  You never fall if you never fight."

His influences include stuff from psychology, philosophy, physics, and writers like krishnamurti.   After you listen to this, eminem won't sound so good anymore.  A lot of the beats are psychedelic, and a lot of them are jazzy and a few of them are both.

So good.  This is perfect tripping music.  I'm thinking about tripping today to listen to this music.  I can put it back up on the shroomery room on soulseek if anyone wants to download it.

ETA:  I think the best tripping album is "How eye one the write to think" under the psuedonym Oliver Hart.  The E & A album has some awesome work on it, but it's not so trippy and not so philosophical.  First born would be a good tripping album too, but I think the beats are a little weaker then How eye one the write to think.  I'd listen to "reintroducing" "Paradise" "Man Vs Ape" "Glass" and "Exhausted Love" from E&A and then listen to the entire Oliver Hart album.

Only one person mentioned Tangerine Dream??!?  Hell, I was tripping to them in the mid-80s, and they had been around a few years then, so mebbe nobody remembers them   Excellent albums by them include Force Majeure, Poland and Cyclone (although opinion is divided about the latter - I love it, but not everyone does).

They released a compilation double-CD about 1987 which is really cool, too...

tom i think that eyedea album is called "the many faces of oliver hart" and it is a trip fo sure.

my preferences include:

Radiohead, anything. start with the album "Kid A" or "The Bends".

Nine Inch Nails - albums "The Fragile" or "The Downward Spiral"

Anything with Les Claypool ... Oysterhead, Primus, The Flying Frog Brigade's album "Purple Onion"

Mozart
Rachmaninoff
Tchaikovsky
Prokofiev
Vivaldi

It's like this music is written to guide your thoughts while tripping.
Especially Mozart is absolutely mind-blowing.
Try his piano concerto 25...

Report back to me once you've listened to that while peaking...

I feel bad for you since you don't appreciate jam bands.... and I hope that one day you find the appreciation.... it is an amazing form of music.... when the vibrations and the instruments and the players all somehow follow the exact same path musically and inspirationally... it is pure beauty

I  cand understand jambands just fine, I've been a musician for 10+ years, and there is nothing more fun than jamming with other musicians, but I certainly wouldn't make people pay to come see me jam...and thats how I see "jambands", they're just improv-bands basically. I like melody. I like songs, real songs, the ones that have a verse and a chorus. Call me simple minded, i like it

Am I the only one who HATES jambands? Goddamn, listen to some fuckin' rock and roll when you're tripping, or some psy/trance. I'm sorry, but Phish sucks. Completely un-inspired "music", no melody, no strcuture, just music and more music and more music. Just my opinion, dont flame me you smelly hippies

I was about to flame you, you anti-phishite, however, upon re-reading your post, I noticed that it was just your opinion.  Respectable words. Isnt all music really just preference anyways?  I mean, come on... Yanni's still around, that must say something.

Now to defend Phish (I feel compelled as a smelly hippy  ) No melody?  No structure?  Listen to any of there studio recordings and you will see just how wrong you are.  Phish is one of many great bands out there truly playing for the audience.  They grab a cosmic wave, and ride on it until its job is done.  Sure when live, there is no structure, but that is the point!  You must feed off the audience to give a truly remarkable show.  Otherwise people are just paying a lot of money to hear the same ol' songs, played the same ol' way.  It makes it interactive in a way.  Anyways, Sorry for that, I am a little bored, so, Off to smoke some good old fasioned honey oil.

Hey taht's cool man... just a matter of opinion....

but I still hope that someday you just totally appreciate a good jam band :p

Goa and psy trance or some ambient is best IMHO, like

MFG
Etnica
Pleiadians (you should definitely check IFO)
Hallucinogen
Filteria
many more

And for some psy ambient besides shpongle
Mystery of the yeti I and II
Celtic cross
Both Posford projects, guy behind Hallucinogen and one of the guys behind Shpongle.
Future sound of London

If interested in some goa/psy you should check psynews.org they have a database with reviews of a whole lot of albums, if you want real psychedelic stuff you gonna find most before 2000. Happy tripping

I used to say "Jam bands suck..just guys noodling around..i don't get it..they just keep playing after the song's done?" But, that was before I took psychedelics and played music. Jamming is the only true form of music in my opinion. Any prearranged attempt to achieve the artistic purity of a jam..is like a candle as a tribute to the sun, a pale symbol of the greater reality.

Tool, Devin Townsend, M83, Sweet Trip, Mum, Pink Floyd, Dredg, NIN, The Album Leaf, The Books, Ozric Tentacles, Solar Quest, Polyphonic Spree. All are amazing, I assure you. Music with multiple layers and not just the simple 3/4 instruments at a time.

I am sorry, even better than listening to music on mushrooms is making electronic music on mushrooms, so says my kitty. He makes all this crazy ass psy trance or whatever, hard to even describe how intense it actually is. Plus even more he reports the trip and the music are controlled as one physical vessel, as the music and the trip are in harmony. The trip effects the music and the music effects the trip leading to a climate that is almost better, if not better that sex. The only problem is once the one of the synthesizers overheated in the summer while tripping, losing the song data. My kat was sorta pissed, but at least the music was bitching while it was being made in real time. The neighbors of the apartment did comment through the wall that the cat was acting rather unusual with strange bits of laughter and joy as my kitty is an audiophile, and the music is even better than the visuals... its indescribable the feeling that is portrayed in this state, it is love itself.

I have started getting into the classical vibe.  Nothing beats Vivaldi's Four Seasons.  The violin solo in the first movement always brings me to tears when I am tripping.  Absolutely beautiful.

Bach
Beethoven
Ravel (Bolero is fucking awesome)
Jimi Hendrix is a must
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
String Cheese
Pat Metheney is great to just lay down and "die" to.  It makes the cosmic transition so peaceful.  (Speaking of Now is a great album)
John Scofield for that funky vibe
Those Solitudes CD's never fail
Nature music is beautiful when you cant go outside
Any world music really gets the energies flowing ie, didgeridoo, indian classical, Turkish Oud music is wild, African drumming, japanese or native flute playing, raggae, latin jazz, etc.

Although the best thing for tripping is my XM satelite radio.  I dont have to deal with picking music (I dont know about you, but that is the single most difficult thing for me while tripping) and there are no commercials.  Plus there is so much variety at your fingertips.

:heart:Peace:heart:

For some reason I feel psytrance would totally scare me on a trip. Alot of techno stuff can be too harsh and mechanical. I like ambient though. My own preferences are more ogranic types of music with long grooving songs. That includes Phish and the Grateful Dead, but also stuff like Pink Floyd. I bet Bjork could be pretty cool too.

Im absolutely amazed that no one has mentioned any jazz. It blows my mind really, and there are so many people who seem to love jam bands(I do too). I love phish and anyone who thinks they suck has no fucking idea what they are talking about.

Im not really talking about the typical jazz standards or big band, although that stuff is trippy too. I just cant think of any type of music that has the same potential to be so very trippy and expressive.
Dizzy, coltrane, and many others were into hallucinogens, coltrane more so than the others.

I would highly recommend that everyone go out and buy some Grant Green, and some Herbie Hancock, (both are jazz funk masters).

Grant green makes possibly the most trippy music ever, and is said to be the father of acid jazz.
DO a good thorough google search on the more trippy jazz musicians, you will find many other names of musicians that will blow your damn mind.

(You will find after really listening to coltrane, that his music is like a heavy dose of acid, so I wouldnt recommend his music unless you want the top of your head blown off while tripping).

Chrome. Late 70's acid punk from San Francisco that sounds like a 10-strip. High energy rock and roll with early industrial influences (sampling, weird noises, etc). Get their album Half Machine Lip Moves or Alien Soundtracks if you like any kind of music at all :headbanger: :royalrainbow:

I love tabla beat science too, Ill have to check out those others.

I just figured Id point out my favorite psychedelic albums.

Herbie Hancock's must have albums: Man Child, Head Hunters, and Secrets. Its all jazz-funk, but not funk like most people are used to. Those three are essential. If you go to a phish show, there are probably about 3 people at any given time listening to herbie, just tripping their asses off. If you know and love herbie, you know music. I mean that guy was playing with miles davis when he was 12 years old.

My number one pick and favorite album ever is grant green's "his majesty kind funk" album. SOng number 2 is actually, by far, the most amazing studio creation I have ever heard. It is a very slow song. Not to bring psychedelics to far into my reply, but that song is absolute magic, really. If you listen to that song and are relaxed while on lsd, there is no song more perfect yet mind blowing. It so good you feel like you can touch it.
By the way nothing he does is very "loud". Its all subtle funky grooves with some of the most increadible guitar licks you will ever hear.

Pat martino: a freak of nature--possibly the most capable jazz guitarest ever. Hes can be a bit overwhelming, but he has a few albums Ideal for just chilling and having an incredible trip. pehapse the best one for that purpose would be "baiyina". A spiritual journey is the point of that album. Its pretty heavy on the hindi influences(ravi shankar etc, etc).

Medeski Martin and Wood: any album will do. They might just teach you something, or scare the shit out of you while tripping. Also they happen to be the most inovative jazz group I have ever heard. That band is definately in my top 3 favs. You wouldnt believe it was three guys unless you knew it for sure. (best drummer and keys I can think of). The bassist is incredible too, the drummer and keyboardist are sort of inhuman. Talk about polyrhythms!

on that same note Miles Davis's "bitches brew": Might just be one of the most "out there" fusion jazz records ever made. Resembles the trip-state VERY well. It is not all good times when listening to this masterpiece.

On an off note, id recommend the greatest funk band ever, "The Meters". Its all fun and games when listening to them. They are the first and best mathmaticians of funk. Very few lyrics, and some of the most well written songs I will ever hear. They are just so much fun. YOu have not heard the best funk can be without having heard the meters. They are a simple 4 piece band, and if you like jambands, these guys have been around for a long time, and you could call them the best without feeling like you just mislead someone.
If you like just chilling a smoking a fat bowl, these guys should be in your player.

i agree with you that jazz is pretty sweet, im still getting more and more into it though so i havent gone as far as to listen to it while tripping. ill check out the others you mentioned too.

From all the posts ive seen of yours you seem to know what youre talking about.

give them a listen and download if you like. They really do the trick for me when im tripping (mushrooms). They like to make music while on LSD so there may be some of that in their finished music.

TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK after listening.

Some good trippin jazz eh?

How about:

John Coltrane w/ Don Cherry -- The avant garde
Lenny Breau -- Anything!
Wes Montgomery is the shit
Obviously Miles Davis, I mean come on...
Howard Roberts
Tuck Andress
George Van Epps
Tal Farlow
John Mclaughlin -- I'd avoid early mahavishnu Orchestra.  They are fucking amazing, but probably a little too tense for tripping.
Django Reinhardt -- Wicked Gypsy jazz
Al Dimeola
Charlie Christian
Sonny Rollins
Dont forget Irvin Berlin -- Wicked old time contemporary jazz
Joe Pass
George Benson will blow your mind -- The later stuff is more experimental, but the early stuff will show what the meaning of Jazz really is.
Pat Martino is wicked.
Ted Green is beyond anything I could even express.

Happy Stemmer?  There are a lot of other wicked Jazz musicians that I could mention for tripping, but these seem to be the meat and potatoes.  I mentioned some good fusion in my last post but you could check out :

Quoiyaien, sure im happy!
I have not listened to afew of the artists in the fusion jazz part of your last post. Thanks alot!

I love to see some appreciation of jazz anywhere I go. I am a jazz/fusion musician and have been for years. To me, there is nothing else that reaches that highest level. It does take some of the more uncommon understandings to really appreciate it though.
WHat can I say, aside from phish and the dead, I dont listen to anything but jazz or jazz-fusion, (and alot of bela fleck and the Ftones)

Shpongle, does blow my mind. Its like they graph that shit out so they can make pictures with music. SHpongle is top notch electric music.

Stemmer, I am just curious, where have you played?  I did a North American Tour with the band Paradoxical What? (band name changed to protect the musicians, you might know them) We play all jazz fusion.  Well, purely in the sense that it is music that doesnt fit into the pre-concieved notions of what music should be.  We played a couple club gigs in Mexico, and actually made it into Peru, El salvadore, and Brazil for a few headliners.  Wow.  All I can say is that brazillian chicks love guitarists!!  Well the ones that made it to our shows anyways!  In Brazil, we hooked up with this dude who sold us mushrooms by the handfull.  He showed up at the end of the gig, and commented on this magic mushrooms banner we had draped over the drum set and said we would love these.  He had good energy so it was easy to trust him.  The mushrooms were awesome.  It was like $10 USD for a small handful (or dose-ee-ah phonetically) as he called it.  Good night.  We got to jam with these amazing musicians, and all in all it was a great tour.  I love brazil!

Sorry for the ramble, I just finished a nice bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, and have quite a nice buzz on.

Medeski Martin & Wood, Moorcheeba, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Marlin is real chill, and of course Pink Floyd. Sneaker Pimps are alo a good one.

If you like just chilling a smoking a fat bowl, these guys should be in your player.

tabla beat science are perfect for trippin hey...some good recommendations there too by the sounds of it, will have to check some out.

dhafer youssef is another of the 'hindi'influenced' artists i adore, quite brilliant.

as for jazz...
albert ayler, charles mingus - both awesome for some sax action
john zorn (of coarse) and eugene chadbourne - for experimental
sun ra - for that spacey, 70s psychedelic jazz

mmmm sun ra, aint nothing weirder. The "cosmos" album is a huge favorite of mine.

Quoiyaien, that sounds like a hell of a tour. Im sad, I have alot of talent but dont know anyone with the same passion for music or the same level of skill. Im jealous......
I live in mid america, and im almost convinced that a musical drought has occured here. Im probably wrong, but I still cant even find a drummer that knows what the hell he is doing(I have flyers everywhere with no results, just emo punk bands, and crummy jam bands respond).
Its always a bad sign if you have been listening to B. olatunji for years and because of your musical prowess, can play better bongos than any drummer you know or have ever met. I dont even play drums for gods sake, I play the guitar.

Im only 22 years old though. Maybe some typical well rounded musicians will come my way.

Who have I played with? A jazz band that playes at a classy local bar every wed and thursday. A few shitty cover bands and garage bands. I Once had the pleasure to play with leftover salmon, that was the most fun by far, and thats not even the style of music I usually play. We smoked a bunch of dank weed out of a honey container(the kind that looks like a bear), and jammed for about an hour. Just for that I consider myself lucky. They are a super heavy bluegrass band in case you dont know who they are. A loud bluegrass band if I ever heard one.

Stemmer, dude, the only way to hook up with musicians is to play with musicians.  Fuck ads.  The only way to get with good musicians is to find where they are.  Do that, and then if you really have talent, they will know.  Talent is not something that exists on its own.  It needs dimensionality to blossom.  I am a teacher.  I teach professional jazz musicans.  The best way to hook up to the scene, is to do it.  And trust me, get the concept of skill level out of the equation.  It only deludes your ego to think that only good music is good music.  If you are making music, it is good music

Play with as many people as you can.  I had to move 3000 miles to hook up with a good band.  After all the gigs I have played, the one thing that I have learned, that was told to me by my late producer "you would not believe who is at 90% of the gigs you play" so if your good, it will be noticed.

In case you were wondering, I also play (and teach) guitar.  It has got to be the single most expressively dynamic instrument in existance.  I mean, look at all you can do with one note!  Fuck, drunken posts go on forever dont they?

Oh well.

I'm with you on what you said about the guitar being the most expressively dynamic instrument in existence...so so versatile, it's so versatile I can't begin to fathom it's depth.

I too am drunk as hell, and I love to talk about music...

Well, I have played with many bands, and I have enjoyed it every time. I do understand that you teach, and thats good......

Id like to keep the skill level of the musicians in the scenario though.

So where pray tell are all the good musicians?
I am well aware that I would be more experienced with music and would have learned alot if I had jammed with more people. I wouldnt have learned a damn thing from most I have met thus far but still...

I taught my best friend how to play bass, he learned how to play pretty well in about two years. I love to jam with him. He just doesnt really know much about music though he is a music lover. The passion is there within each note for sure.

Besides leftover salmon, I have never jammed with anybody, that looks at music the way I do. It has alot to do with skill and math.
If your talking jazz, how do you play well with others without lots of knowledge and skill?
You just cant really......
My best friend sure can interact with me during a 4 note jam, but if he knew more Id enjoy it even more.

I didnt mean flyers on the street, I meant flyers in the music dept's of various colleges.

WHat would you recommend I do besides the obvious Quoiyaien? I do know the value of all the musicians I have played with, even the one who had no idea what they were doing. I really want to know what you might suggest. Please

Anyone a fan of Allan Holdsworth. Well, he is possibly the most inhuman guitar player ever. Just thought Id mention him in this thread.

Ed van halen called him the best guitarest ever. Zappa called him the most interesting guitarest ever.

He is the most increadible fusion guitarest I have ever heard, by far. He is a fucking extraterrestrial.....Thats my theory.

i enjoy the reggae music while riding the magnificent force of an LSD experence. Augustus Pablo, Dennis Brown, and Burning Spear are my personal favorites. Drum and bass is also very enjoyable. Diesalboy and Dara are my usual selections.
