Canner whistle

This is probably a very stupid question but are pressure canners suppose to make a loud whistling noise of steam? I started cooking with 15 psi and after about 10 minutes a loud whistle noise scared the shit out of me. Is it normal? And If it is should I start the timer when it whistles? I don't have my manual It makes me think the canner is going to explode...

I have a 'whistle' pc (25 quid at Argos) I load the PC. Turn the gas on full. After about 10 mins it whistles loudly, with the weight spinning as it releases steam. (it is designed to spin) Then I turn the heat down about half, so the weight continues to spin slowley, with hisses. So yeah, wait till it hisses, then turn temp down making sure it continues to hiss. (I used to just use it on full gas, but would almost boil the pc dry (about an inch water left) On half heat it stays half full. Start timing from when hissing starts. The steam escaping keeps the pressure at 15psi, like a pressure release valve set for 15psi

The first time I ever operated a pressure cooker the thing scared me too. I was hiding behind the wall thinking the damn thing was going to explode. Just make sure you read the instructions and keep it clean.

I don't know what model it is but it whistles out of the pressure cylinder.

Without knowing anything else. Sounds like to high heat. Should hiss a bit, not whistle.

None of the AA PC's I have whistle, unless I release the stream release toggle.
Seems to me if it is "whistling" it would be blowing out to much pressure & water in the steam. Unless it was designed to "whistle". Do it do any "tunes"? (joke)

-picture borrowed from kalyx When the pc is building up the initial pressure, first couple psi, it will have steam coming out and it will have a whistle sound to it. After it's done this for 3-5 minutes put the pressure regulator thingymajig on. Did you turn the heat down after reaching 15 psi? I turn mine down from high down to medium temp, so from 9 to 5-6.

Mine whistles when I don't have the Metal psi guage (mirror, only goes to 15)
But it still kind of whistles....When it whistles loudly that means that both over pressure release values are going off...lol, it's only happened once

^^^^^^^^^^^^ Exactly, these things can explode if used improperly. I've read a few posts of such occurrences. Just imagine all that metal flying around your kitchen, not a good thought huh. Most middle of the range pc's have good safety features built in, but you still have to use common sense. Just be careful

yeah, be sure you turn the heat down. The first time my friend made jars he had the burner on HIGH for around an hour until the horrid stench of burning grain filled the room. Youll run out of water if you dont turn it down.

i know this is a old post but i didnt want to make a new one.
Im wondering if anyone can help me out, I have a presto 23quart pressure canner. Problem is last night i used it to sterilize some rye. I didnt really hear any whistle and everything seemed to run smoothly at 15psi with the weight jigglin like it should. So as i type right now I have some no pour agar im trying to sterilize and the dang things whistling loud! i turned it off because of pure fear also i forgot to mention dropped the lid washing it and now the gauge is fogging up. is this the problem, did i fuck something up? also can i still use this canner with the gauge doing that. I would like this solved asap if anyone could help me that would be much appreciated and worth a rating. I have this dam agar just sitting here!

9 fucking years old, are you kidding me?
You couldn't make your own thread because you "didn't feel like it"?
If this wasn't important enough to make your own thread for, I hardly see how you can expect us to give it priority.
You might have fucked something up, you might not have, nobody can really tell you with the information you've provided anyway. If I dropped the lid and the gauge started showing signs of a pressure leak, or fogging up when it hadn't before, I'd probably stop using it for safety reasons.
Did you even read this thread you bumped? It said to turn the heat down.

If you had read the forum rules before you dredged up ancient shit you would see that bumping threads like this is specifically discouraged, as you may have noticed from the fact that you had to bypass a notice saying only to bump if it's TRULY relevant, which you clicked past willfully.
You'll notice that didn't prevent me from giving advice, but if you didn't see that rule, I suspect you didn't see the others either. It's not specifically me that it bothers, but it makes the forum more of a mess than it needs to be, among other reasons.
And again, the way to ask a question is by making your own thread, as I stated in the first post. If you think this is butthurt you haven't seen what the Shroomery is capable of as a collective.
There's also the Q&A thread. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14297019

I figured it was "TRULY relevant" So i willfully clicked the fuck out of that button. But honestly I truly am sorry to anyone else if posting on an old thread is frowned upon I apologize i guess. didnt mean to make a mess of things..
only reason I re posted on here is because I didnt want to get shit for posting something I could have looked up, fuck me right!
