Wheres the Vermiculite?
    #3631431 - 01/15/05 02:27 PM (20 years, 5 days ago)

I few months ago i purchased a bag of vermiculite from Lowe's and now i am in need of some more.  I called them and asked them if hey had any in stock or on the way and they acted like they've never heard of it before.  Ive called a number of garden stores as well and they gave me the same response.  I think i read a post on here about vermiculite causing cancer so maybe the stores have stopped selling it.  Or maybe there's not enough demand for it right now because its winter.
Has anyone else had problems obtaining this stuff.  I'm a bit worried because vermiculite is a key ingredient in producing my friends. :frown:

the thing is that you really dont need vermiculite...you can use whole grains stead of PF....its easy. And then you can use something else to case with like peat moss if you absolutely have to . . but theres no reason why you should have to since you can order it online, or get it from a specialty garden store.

Next time try doing a search on Verm...it has been talked about alot.

Yes there was a scare on Verm a few years ago.
Seems that one mine was pumping out some bad Verm...and alot of stores pulled it from the shelf.
It was hard to find for a little while...but shouldn't be too hard to find now.

It's Winter...some stores only carry it Seasonally.
So you might have to look around for it.
You will find Verm in the Spring time alot easier than in the Winter time.

My suggestion....go check out more stores.
Try....Lowes, Home Depot, any kind of hardware stores and nursery's.
If you still can't find any...you can buy it online.
Several of the Shroomery Sponsors have Verm in stock.

Good luck!~

Agway in northeast, farm supply store but you must buy hugh (cubic yard) bags, which would probably cost more to ship then the product itself. Before I went to agway I tried Home Depot 3 times and the guy said they usually carry it but were out of stock each time, could be a seasonal thing.

I mean use just whole grains as substrate for your jars. In the PF tek you use a mixture of verm and flour, instead of that you simply use whole grains that have been steeped in water for 24 hours, then case them in peat moss if you have to. Its really not that much more difficult than PF tek. I use whole grains then case them with solid vermiculite...which i get at lowes, but peat moss is just as good.

you do however need a PC for whole grains....

I really dont get why this question is asked so much. If you really cant find it in garden stores, make a money order and send for it. But If I absolutely couldnt get it anymore, id just case with peat moss.

I went to home depot and they said that vermiculite was bad for the environment. I eventually found some at a small local garden store.
