I have a couple small trees but it's hard to start from cuttings.

I had a kratom plant/tree, but it died while i was on vacation for the last 2 weeks. I asked my father to pop into my place and water it for me, but apparantly he didn't do it often enough and i came home ot find it dead =(.

It's generally pretty hard to start from cuttings, i was hoping to have my plant grow big enough to try out some possible techniques that would ensure it more success in rooting.

Needless to say i never got that far.

Has anyone tried putting a live branch still connected to the tree with a cut in it, along the ground with a with a stake hold it down and see if it roots ?

neuro, sorry to hear about your kratom dying. That is a tough break for sure. They are very drought sensitive and it's better to overwater than underwater. I just had a cutting under a dome for 5 months that died. It lived so long I was hoping it would grow but the last week I've seen the tell tale brown creep up the stem and the leaves are curling so I know it's dead or just about dead and dying. 5 months and it decided to die. I'm going to try an aerocloner, one of many projects I've been putting off.

I had several ideas, one of which was air layering, ground layering, some hormones, and other such things.

I'm currently trying air layering but it doesn't look so great. This is a bad time of year to do it unless you are down under. It's better to wait until spring when you see new growth. Hard to root plants are even harder in the winter because they go dormant then.

I had been keeping mine under artifical summer conditions in a separate container while i was working. It was growing quite well, until i went on vacation.

Did you do anything special, or just cut and stick?

My first cutting lost all his leaves because the stem was broken.
The part above the crack died so I had to cut it off. (Tried Stonehenges advice to hold in place with tape & a straw but that didn't work). I only have a leaveless stem but it isn't dead yet so I keep watering it.
In the mean time, my wife ordered 2 extra kratom plants(as a suprise, because she unpacked my first plant and believes she damaged it)
She ordered them from Australia and placed the order a few days before the 1st of January 2005 (when it became illegal)Guess I was lucky and that it passed customs. I just love her!!
You can take a look at this link:
http://users.pandora.be/b008592/Pictures/Kratom/HPIM2233.JPG

On the left you can see my first plant(or what's left)
I'll check daily if they still have enough water, and sprinkle 3x day water over the leaves, I also put a box filled with water on the radiator and the temp is always between 19 and 21 degrees C
If somebody can give some more helpful advice I would be very grateful because I don't have any growing experience.
As what I have read, it's very hard to root a cutting but that it's easy to maintain a plant as long as you give it enough water, correct?

Keep you guys informed.

Borg, wait until they grow before you count your successes. I've had them stay green for months and then die. Just had a cutting die after 5 months. If you see growth you are in good shape.

I'm assuming he checked for root growth and found it, gentle tug or something like that. He said they struck, unless he just meant they're not dead yet, in which case i'll echo your sentiments.
