CAC FOR EVEN PINNING
    #3629308 - 01/14/05 07:03 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

CAC or CI
Fully colonized spawn run substrate is used to introduce mycelia into the casing layer. This is often used to improve crop uniformity, crop cycling, mushroom quality, and yields. Spawn run compost at casing (CAC) is used to inoculate the casing during the mixing or application of the casing.

CAC is now produced much like spawn?in aseptic conditions?by those who produce and supply spawn to growers. This process is called casing inoculum (CI).

By adding the mycelia uniformly throughout the casing, the spawn growth into the casing is quicker and more even. The time from casing to harvest is reduced by 5?7 days so that the rooms can be cycled faster or more breaks can be harvested in the same time.

Mycelial growth is uniform on the surface, which encourages the mushrooms to form on the surface as well. Therefore, they are cleaner. Yields are improved since the mushroom growth is uniform and crop management is easier. In addition, more mushrooms are produced from areas that may have less nutrition.

allright as i understand this, but getting the spawn into the layer itself,
yould turn the casing layer into a little but jet nutritios layer.

usually the casing layer should contain no nutes, for example peat or
straight verm, afaik no nutes at all.

spawning the casing layer would, due to the spawn itself, turn the layer
into a nutritious layer and imho that should decrease the production!

example, get uncased rye crumbled in a casing container.
the mycelium will reform and grow after a few days,
till its all white and shiney again.

eventually few pins are forming and some mush,
not compareable to what would have been produced with the Non-nutritious layer.

get me? sorry im fucking blazed :1up:
hope i dont write too much mumbo jumbo.
peace ohm :mushroom2:

*edit*
i just forgot to mention that i know there are some strains
not needing a casing layer at all such as:
oysters (strawlog) or lentinus.

I suggest you read the reference. Penn State seems to have another train of thought. On their say so - I think it's worth looking into.

>usually the casing layer should contain no nutes

The reason the casing should contain no nutritions is the contamination risk.
Spawn is not as contamination prone than uncolonized grains.

This method appears to have great potential, but would take more work as you would also have to colonize the casing layer, and as they mention, be pretty clean about it.
I think Coir would work great with this tek, as it is a "kinda" nutritious casing layer. It is nutritious enough that you could get it colonized, but not nutritious enough that you have to worry about breaking up a solid maass like you would get trying to use rye as the casing layer.
I also think the best casing material for this method will be a mixture, ie coir/verm, and not a "single" material.

You are not colonizing the full casing layer. What CAC does is create colonized BRIDGES or channels (sort of) through the casing layer that the underlaying myc in the substrate can touch, fuse with & reach the surface faster.

Interesting agar, first I must master some other things but will try some day.
Have you ever used this "tek"?

spawn in the casing layer mix?

Foaf was thinking...... something on the order of casing substrate a little less than normal, then using SAME jar batch & Gen WBS/RYE spawn that was used to spawn substrate.

Sprinklin casing mix with enough colonized grains so grains are about 1/4 inch from each other over casing surface, then adding thin layer over that to make it normal depth.

Then.... just incubate more & see what happens.

you could also layer the casing mix with spawn,
or simply take some spawn that was originally used (g2g a extra jar)
and mix it in with the sterilized layer before applying it.

that'd really be worth a try actually

Keep in mind that this is for Agaricus mushroom growing, which according to the document, takes much much longer to colonize the casing layer than cubensis (couldn't find the exact amount of time).

In ideal incubation conditions, cubensis should only take 3-4 days max to adequately colonize the casing layer (usually 2-3). I suppose knocking a day or two off cubensis colonization time is worth it.

They do say it can help with pinset though, so that's always a good thing (and they're cleaner!).

But I wonder if it's worth the risk/effort with cubensis?

A few tryies is the only way to find out but for a great pin set its worth the try
