heating pads?

I got a reptile heating pad from the pet store to heat my plexiglass within a sea chest terrarium.
It is doing a good job. Too good of a job! Even with a timer so it runs only 15 minute (shortest time setting I could do) for every 45 minutes, it gets the tank over 90 degrees fast.
The terrarium section is about 2 square feet. Maybe I got too big a pad- it is for a 20-30 gallon terrarium.
Ideas? Has anyone else using reptile pads figured out an appropriate setup?

Yeah, don't use it. We don't really need extra heat in the summer. If you want to raise the temperature a little, I suggest a flourescent light.

Get a dimmer switch. Then you can control how hot the heating pad gets. You can buy an inline dimmer for about 15 bux or you can make one out of a wall switch dimmer for about 6 bux. Works well.

A dimmer switch would probably be OK/safe in this case. Just make sure to check the power ratings. I've seen some extension coords w/ built-in dimmers. A more energy-efficient means would be using a VARIAC (variable transformer).
An easier solution might be to insulate by putting a thin piece of wood between the heater and the aquarium. This will also help to distribute the heat a little more evenly.

I like the control of a dimmer switch.
I know some say "no extra heat" but when I upped the temperature from 70-75 to 85ish the colonization started taking off. I used an aquarium heater in a water bath to do that, but now I am trying to get the heat right without it so it will still be controllable after I case.
Thanks
