Strain Isolation Q
    #3627764 - 01/14/05 10:05 AM (20 years, 6 days ago)

Is the reason that a person would isolate a certain mushroom's genetics so that it will have both the supirior genetics of the chosen mushroom and so that that single mushroom orginism will have no other competing orginisms of the same strain fighting eachother? In essence having less competition for growth between different spores of the same strain. I was just wonder on the benifits of agar. It seems like a lot of work when you could just use a grain spawn to inoculate. Laters--Chinaboy

There are several benefits to issolating a strain on agar .

One can be assured of if properly selected ...
Fast growing vegetive myc ... highly rhizomorphic
Purity of the strain ... lack of cottony sectors .
Cleanliness of the myc itself ... lack of competitor organisms .
Response time to primordia formation .
Number of primordia
Proportion of primordia formed that grow to maturity.
Size shape and color of fruits
Total yeilds
Disease resistant
c02 tolerance \sensitivity
Temp limits
Ease of harvesting .

Where as with a multispore it is tough to have any control over any of these factors , basically you are at the mercy of whatever spores take over and domiate the whole big picture . Many strains are created when doing this . So viability and pureness are always questioned .

And IMHO , there is nothing like watching it grow on agar

Hope this helps
