IMO it's WBS.

wild bird seed. i don't know why it's always called that. you just want a mix that is mostly millet without any big chunks of stuff like corn or sunflower seeds. finch seed usually works quite well. avoid any of the ones that have funky-colored vitamins in them.
i am definitely interested in finding a birdseed tek if anyone knows of one.
there's probably a decent one at the FAQ but i'll bet it makes things sound more complicated than they really are. one thing you can definitely benefit from is checking out the "polyfil for simple minds" (i think that's what it's called) tek at www.fungifun.org. there's a link to it in our FAQ here if i remember correctly. it's a good pictorial set of instructions for making filters out of polyfil.
a simple birdseed tek is as follows:
quart jars, some finch seed, and stuff for the polyfil tek are really all you need. for every jar you intend to make, measure out a half jar of dry seed. soak this in warm water for 12-24 hours until it plumps up nicely. rinse it in a strainer and let all of the excess water drain out. load it into the jars. it should fill them about 2/3. put the lids on as directed in the polyfil tek. PC at 15 PSI for one hour. as soon as you remove them from the PC, give them a vigourous shaking. this will help keep the grain from sticking and keep them shakeable later on. let them cool overnight, inoculate (you can stick the needle right through the polyfil filter), and give them another good shake. store some place nice and warm. hope that helps. check out the FAQ.

i wouldn't suggest that either, but "stepping" up to bulk would imply that he isn't, no?

it can be harder to get than WBS though. I'm lucky enough to live near an organic coop.
