"Public" land and it's uses in America

How much land does the American government own? Where would I begin to look for such information?
I know the logging industry uses it to harvest wood, which I assume they are buying from the government.
Cattlemen and ranchers use it for grazing cattle.
Is there any program to allow private citizens to live on public land?
I'm thinking maybe we could set up a system where people live on public land (mostly wooded areas) in small superefficient mobile structures. There would be a parking lot alongside the nearest road, and some sort of rail or cable based transportation system capable of transporting a few people and small to medium sized loads. Automated drones could even deliver supplies to members who live on this system.
All electricity could be generated on site, the only fuels allowed would be natural fuel such as wood, and gaseous fuels such as natural gas and propane. This would eliminate any need to run high voltage electrical wires, though that may be more feasable to do in some cases, or some people may just want to live without it.
Maybe the whole thing could be sponsored by KwickieMart, which would own the store at the entrance to the community where the rail or cable starts.

622.8 Million Acres or about 30% of the total land mass in America!
United States General Accounting Office Washington, DC www.gao.gov/cgi-bin/getrpt?RCED-96-40
If you add in state and local government ownership you bring the number up to 42%
Under the guise of environmental protection, using the Endangered Species Act, wetland policies, heritage and historical designations, national monuments, wildlife refuges, scenic highways and rivers. the government has jurisdiction over virtually all the land in the United States.
It should be noted that the federal government is prohibited from purchasing land other than for purposes enumerated in Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution
Clause 17: To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;
When government owns the land, it can manage the land any way it wishes. Government will decide what crops to grow, and which products to manufacture on its land, and invite selected "private" parties to enter into partnership arrangements to provide the labor.
So Can you live on the government land? The answer is Yes, provided you pay the government rent and the government has designated the land for that use. Although I question the privilege of the government owning the land in the first place.
The US Government has no rights! It has only the privileges that are given to it, or the restrictions placed on it, in the constitution.
