Drying Liberty caps...
    #3627468 - 01/14/05 07:51 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hey,

Ive been doing mushies for a while now.
Am going hunting for caps in London (UK) on weekend for the 1st time.
First of all- Ive got a lot of field guides etc- but in any case, are there any poisonous lookalikes that are conic/umbonate like caps?

Also- is it possible to dry them using an oven? if so- how?
If not- how can I dry them easily? I dont have a fan, or any big heaters or anything....

thanks- glad i found this site, its a good source of info.

I think you're a bit late dude.

yes, there are lookalikes and you should learn the identifying characteristics of liberty caps before hunting for them.

don't dry them in the oven, just set them out on some newspaper or cardboard for a couple days then finish drying with desiccant.

Genera with poisonous species you're likely to have problems with include Galerina, Inocybe, and Mycena. If you don't yet know how to identify your finds accurately to genus then you should spend the time between now and your mushroom hunt studying.

Happy mushrooming!

You got a while before the next season, study up.

And heat kills psilocybin, using an oven is psilocybin genocide, read the FAQ's f00.

I used to go hunting for liberty caps, but I only find little clumps. Try going through cleared forest looking for P Pelliculosa!

I have n used my oven for thirty yers to crisp dry shrooms and never lost anything. If yo read the method provided int he Shroomery's Ultimate shroom guide , that is the method I used in the past.

You dy ry them on newspaper spread apart in rows so they ar not touching each other. Shrooms lying on top one another cause an osidation and loss of chemicals. After two tothree days when they appear dried, then you follow the method described im my guide. Then you store them in a glss container with a rubber stopper top or so. They can last for years.

In the late 1970s, some shroom enthyusiasts published a paper where they had analysed specimens of liberty caps from 1851 England stored on a sheet in a local herbarium of a prominant university. The liberty caps were shown in comparative analysis to some liberty caps picki ed in Oregon and Washing and found them to be as potent a s the English ones from over 115 years before.

Thanks for the advice- i swear if you put mushrooms out fresh they go rotten though? No?

Ive got lots of field guides and have learnt alot about hunting- ive been last year with a friend, whose dad is a mycologist...that went pretty well. I can usually spot them out.

I know it's not the season but youd be surprised. Most of them come in august/september but like, you still get them in the winter months- you just have to look harder.
