Depends what you meen when you say good?
Works best = Food dehydrator without heat. Then an internal circulation desiccant chamber. Followed by desiccant in the final storage container, possibly saturated with CO2 gas.
Between = Open air fan drying. Then finish off in a container with goods laying on a screen above some desiccant, with possible internal circulation.
Cheapest = Open air fan drying only. Any fan blowing across your goods while they rest on chicken wire.

Well basically I'm willing to throw some cash in on a $40 dehydrator.. but I'm not looking to spend too much more than that on drying them.

Electricity?
You don't NEED desiccant, however, that will limit the time you can store them, and will increase your chances of growing mold on/inside them after you stop drying them. (They will only get as dry as the dryness of your house. Most houses are 40%-60%, winter time without humidifiers can give you a bonus of about 20%-50% humidity.)
desiccant will drop the humidity down to 0%-10% humidity.
