Microwave Pressure Cooker
    #362523 - 07/28/01 01:09 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

Ok peoples out there, Ripley's Believe It or Not time. Yes, I recently acquired the following item from eBay: a microwave pressure cooker.

There is enough room in here to hold at least 2 short jars. There is also a valve on the top that according to the instructions should be open during usage until you take it out of the microwave. But the instructions are extremely minimal. Only really 2 recipes in there and Do's and Don'ts. I have no idea if there is a consistant psi of 15, or even if it'll work like it a regular pressure cooker. But for $5 it's worth an experiment.

if anyone has encountered one of these, or something similar, I'd appreciate the assistance. Even so I can cook a few good meals with it would be nice. TIA

I've heard alot of talk of these but no follow up from the people that got them. One way that may work with them is the ball plastic lids from walmart with a 3/8" hole drilled in middle accompanied with a filter disk or polyfill. Or you might be able to just turn the whole thing into one big cake, but water content might be tricky, good luck and keep us posted.

try out a couple jars and see how well they do, can't hurt. Either way sounds like you got a good deal.

I bought one of these also from ebay for a dollar.
I used it to sterilize a honey water jar for liquid inoculant and it worked well...no contamination. I have no idea if it reaches nearly 15 psi or not...but seemed to work well for sterilizing small things like petris.

Like you say, for $5 it's worth the experiment - but from the looks of the image that appears to be a plastic or resin container with no apparent lid-locking mechanism. From this I would surmise that the vessel almost certainly could not safely contain 15PSI @ 250?F, thus it is not really a pressure cooker in the generally accepted sense. Undoubtedly some creative marketing folks figured that "well, it does cook at atmospheric pressure, so we can get away with calling it a 'presure cooker'" :-)
OTOH, it probably will work just fine for doing sterilization work on PF cakes, honey-water, etc. It might not be sufficient for sterilizing whole grain (rye, birdseed, etc.) - but the only way to find out for sure is to give it a try. It sure would be a convenient alternative to a PC if it works...

actually, there is lid locking on the handles. And it comes together quite tightly once it is locked. However there is air release knob on the top, as I suspect if it did not allow air to escape in the microwave, we would having an "exploding-egg" problem (ever see a whole egg go boom in a microwave?)

what little instructions (actually it's just 2 recipes) suggest opening the valve/knob while it is in the microwave and then when the cooking is done, to remove it from the microwave and close the valve to lock in the pressure/steam.

I'm just curious if I should be putting water in the thing along with the jars so that the plastic doesn't melt to the glass. Also I am going to use either the plastic lids or use plastic wrap to seal the jars. As all of my other microwave experiments have failed, I can't wait to try this one. Check back in a week or so to see the results.

OK, that bit about opening the valve whilst in the microwave, then closing it to "keep the pressure in" after you take it out confirms that it doesn't really work the way a stovetop type PC does. Your exploding-egg scenario is right on target!

Once you take the vessel out of the microwave it will start to cool. If the vessel is sealed as it cools the internal pressure will fall. When you open the valve or pop the lid later on you may well hear a little air-sucking sound as the pressure equalizes.

I would suggest that you put some water in there with the jars - that will keep the internal temperature in the low 200's and likely prevent anything from melting.

Good luck with that thing - post how it goes.

OK, that bit about opening the valve whilst in the microwave, then closing it to "keep the pressure in".........makes it sound like some sort of "vacuum cooker", ie a reduced pressure cooker. Strange.....might work though. Apparently microbes can't handle rapid changes in pressure, be they positive or negative.

OK, so I finally had a chance to try this out.
I picked up some 1/2 pint short jars and plastic lids. Each lid had holes punched in it. And the microwave pc can hold 2 jars at a time. So I made the standard PF substrate mixture, with 60cc's of water. Placed it in the container with with a little water at the bottom.
I microwaved on HIGH for 10 mins. Once it was finished cooking I took it out and closed the valve on the top. After an hour of cooling, I couldn't resist and opened it up to take a look. Water poured down the sides. The jars looked like the mixture shrunk a little. The water was still there in the bottom of the container. So I stuck it back in just in case of any contaims and zapped for another 4 mins. Bigger mistake. The smell of baked rice soon filled the house. Once again, when the cooking was done, I took it out (held my nose) and closed the valve. After some time I looked in and the smell was too baked. I looked at the jars and the mixture totally shrunk. So I opened one up and tapped out the cake. Rock hard. No moisture at all. All water was sucked out of the little holes in the lids of the jars.

So, I could add to the water ratio, but that would make a watery sludge. Anyone wanna handle this?

hmmmmm well I used a normal microwave @high power for 8mins to sterilise 1/2pint tupperware containers, and I can now see white fuzz appearing =)

CdC, it?s not the pressure change that sterilizes, it?s the higher boiling temperature of water at a higher pressure.
This device is nothing more than a cleverly marketed plastic pot.

[sigh]Anno, I know that, of course. Pretty basic stuff, yes?[/sigh]
Someone here, (Una maybe?) said that autoclaves which can remain sealed while they cool down and lose pressure, ie create a vacuum, which can then be rapidly released (for want of a better word), will result in a more complete sterilisation due to the sudden change in pressure. I don't know if this is true, which is why I said "apparently".
And you thought I didn't know how a pressure cooker works.:(
Anno, I am hurt.:D

CdC, I can only judge your skills and knowledge by what you are posting. I have seen your great growing sucess thus wondering even more to see you writing about" pressure change killing bacteria".
The bacterial endospores which are the problem when sterilizing can survive such harsh conditions, that I seriously doubt that a sudden pressure change of about 15 psi will do them any harm.
But it?s ok if you didn?t want to imply this. ;)

Jared, how do you imagine this should work?

Aww Anno, you didn't read the tone of my post wrongly did you? Good;)
As I said, I was just repeating what I vaguely remember someone saying at some point. I was just trying to suggest to didgiangel the vague possibility that his investment wasn't waste of $5:D
