first hunting trip

Location: San Louis Obispo, California Central Coast.
My friend and I went up into the horse pasture behind our school's campus and found some mushrooms. We just had about 5 steady days of rain and this is the first day of warmth we've had in a while. The shrooms we found were in the pasture and some of them were actually growning on the horse dung. The caps range from about a nickle to about a quarter in size. They have dark gills underneathe the cap and a hollow stem. When bruised the cap turns a dark color. My question is if these are magic mushrooms or not. Thanks

Hi ajavila, Welcome to the shroomery.
You need to give us a better description, including spore print color, before we can begin ID. Please follow the protocol for requesting mushroom ID found here. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2263556/an/0/page/0
Those do resemble copes digitalcube, but I don't think copes are native to California. A preliminary guess would be Stropharia semiglobata.

if they stained blue, they're probably cope cyans. being cali, i'm sure your climate could support copes, but i don't know if they are actually native there or not.
first things I thought, disregarding all but ur pic, was cope cyans.

Is that blueing I see on the outer part of the cap? Did they grow to the hight of the grass around them? We found lotsa sulfer caps that look like those pics in a petting zoo/field thingy. But could just be the pic - some more info is needed.

No, they're not Cope cyans. They don't grow in California. Neither do Cubensis. My guess is that those are Agrocybes of some sort.

Sorry I've yet to do a spore print but we're going to to one today. I'll get back to you guys with the rest of the info.
Thanks Anthony

I highly doubt anyone has found cubes growing outdoors here in California. The RH has to be very high - California has its wet times, but, its pretty damn dry most of the time.
