thick ass mycelium
    #3623562 - 01/13/05 01:49 PM (20 years, 7 days ago)

I recently flipped a few of my PF jars and the cakes slid down about 2 cm or so.  Now the mycelium on the bottom of the jars is growing EXTREMELY THICK in the open space area, not just on the cake itself, and also growing on the glass.  It is also extremely fluffy and dense, compared to the rhizo myc that colonizes the rest of the cake.  I'm not really concerned (should I be?) but I was wondering if anyone had an explanation...

no i'm certain it's not cobweb. definitley myc white as snow, no foul smells. i used to culture molds in high school. I'm fairly familiar with many different molds. Just curious...

Maybe your temps a bit high and the myc is all revved up with nowhere to go. I get that way some times when I've had too much mushy

I've had this happen in my jars as well. Sometimes when it grows so aggressively like that it causes problems if I dunk the cake. It seems that after I dunk it that fluffy mycelium tends to shrink, toughen up, and get hard or callous. I'm not sure how to explain it exactly. That's the best explanation I can think of though. I have noticed that I don't usually get pins in these hardened areas of the cake.

My solution to this has been to roll the cake in an extra thick layer of dry vermiculte. Then I spray the verm down really well until it's nearly saturated. I then place the cake in the fruiting chamber and I turn the heat up to about 83F degrees for a few days until I can see the myc starting to grow though the verm. Just like you would do with a casing. Then I back the temps back down to 75F and pinnin usually begins a few days after that all over the cake.

So try this if you start having problems with "hardening" or "callousing" of those extra thick layers of fluffy myc. It works for me at least. Hope this helps and GL.
