January mushrooms
    #3623518 - 01/13/05 03:37 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I live in Upstate New York and today all the snow melted!

I was walking my dog around the yard when I noticed this mushroom patch, and one particularly crazy looking mushroom.

Cool to find that right after it had snowed.
Did you bring any back home to try and identify?

Or even tell me whats up with that one funky one.

Pick a few, make a spore print (so you can tell us what color the spore print is), and give us a description of the other things that we can't see in the photos. There's a sticky thread at the top of the forum that tells you what sorts of things we need to know about.

Happy mushrooming!

Actually, given the extremely hygrophanous caps, my first thought was Cortinarius. Cortinarius, of course, are closely related to Galerina. Neither should be eaten.

Happy mushrooming!

My guess is Tubaria.

I've been finding a lot of them this winter. They are hygrophanous, fading to almost white. A spore print probably won't help us distinguish between these three genera because all three have the same color spores. In any event they are not worth eating for any reason and may be deadly. The are fascinating however because they can withstand freezing temperatures. Some plants and animals manufacture their own antifreeze and it appears that this species of mushroom does as well. I wounder what the antifreeze compound is.

*spits out mushrooms*

Thanks for the info, I just thought they were really cool and probably identifiable just by the climate/weather they grew in.

Photogenic little guys.

Oh man.. I just cant wait till other seasons, some really crazy mushrooms grow around this place.
