I have a red eared slider named lucky. He was about the size of a quarter when I found him in the strainer of my swimming pool. he'd been sucked up through the vacuum and was in the strainer basket and looked completely dead. His arms legs and head were flopping out. I brought him in and ran some fresh water over him for about 10 minutes and then he started twitching and before I knew it he was moving around. I have him in a 20 gallon aquarium and he is the coolest turtle. He's about the size of my hand now and I've had him about 2 years.

I got a red ear named "Tippy". 2 years ago, a FOAF was moving back to Texas, originaly had 2 redears  in the same 20 Gal. tank, 1 ate the other,I got the 1 that didn't get et. I keep mine in a 55 Gal. tank...48" X 22" high X 12"deep.A true loner. It will kill anything you put in the tank.I keep a gooseneck lamp, 60 watt on a 9 hour timer, shining on a dry red slate "island".They definately like to bask in the 'sun'.{Need a ramp up, though}These turtles have a  curious habit  {mating??} of wiggling their LONG front claws if they are threatened. I think it's how they worshop me. :grin:Good luck if you get one, mine will probably outlive me.

are red eared turtles generally small? i think that may be the one my old roomie had. she got in South Carolina. all it did was float all day long and then sun itself on a big rock.

i used to play hide and seek with my turtles too, but i permanently lost one. never ever found it. even when we moved. was about 10 or more years ago when i was a youngen. i decided that the next turtle i wanted was a sea turtle. i have a saltwater tank, now i just have to find a small sea turtle.

I've got a red ear slider. I lucked out and got a stupid one (which was probably how I was able to catch him). I keep a few goldfish with him. When I got the fish he was all Special Ed "I got fishes, I got fishes, yeah!!" The ones smarter than him lived, the rest became turtle food, chalk that one up to survival of the fittest.

The only downside is they're pretty sloppy eaters and you've got to clean their tank often or it really stinks (as well as being bad for the turtle and fish). Even if you get a big pump they say that you're supposed to replace the water entirely every week, but what do they know. I don't regret getting mine, even if he is a mean little shit.

GH

They start small but can get quite large, theres not much else a turtle can do,its not as if it can play the banjo! (unless its a terrapin of course)

you can keep them small by keeping them in smaller aquariums. They'll grow to fit their environment like fish.

This incorrect and a misconception. It doesnt matter how large your tank is. The turtle will always grow to whatever size it was intended to.

I was on the Greek island of Cephalonia, when the baby Loggerhead turtles were hatching, they were heading towards the tavernas thinking the light was the moon!(the reflection of the moon on the sea is their compass)They crawled over the sand normal fashion but when you picked one up it started doing the breast stroke, this at only a few seconds of age.Quick learners indeed!!
