I may have found the perfect incubation tool

I was down at the thrift-store (Salvation Army Store), and I stumbled upon the coolest thing. I would have never thought they even existed.
A yogurt maker! Basically, it is a long thin chamber that holds five jars. The chamber is 5W-11W @ 120V. It heats up evenly to culture the bacteria that turns milk into yogurt. I am getting readings on this as I type.
I am not sure if this will mind running for weeks, but at 5W-11W it should not have a problem. (I assume that it has its own internal thermostat to regulate temprature.)
It is clean, neat, non-suspicious, compact, one wire, and will fit the jars that I already have. I even found a few on e-bay! If this works out, I am GOING to get more! Even I couldn't build a more efficient, compact unit.
The products name is, "Yogurt Maker by Salton", I paid $8.95. I have seen them sold for $19.00 new. Mine has been used, looks like it was used once! (The box looks like it was from 1960, but is labeled 1990!)
Was 1990 the, "Year of the yogurt?" I do remember seeing a lot of TCBY shops... I no longer see them now.

From what I've just read about making yogurt leads me to believe this device probably operates at 110* F, if true this is way to warm. Being that it's such low wattage I don't know if it can get that warm though.

Yes, this is true. Perhaps it would work if the lid was left off.

Even if it doesn't work for an incubator atleast you can make some yogurt, that's pretty cool too.

You should be able to just put in one of them turny dial things you get at radio shack...what are they called again? As long as it gets hot enough you could always turn it down I'd think.
5 jars is a very small amount but I guess thats all alot do who do small...even if you do really big alot of bulk shouldnt need much in the amount of jars... how big of jars though? Looks like only pints at the max or so.

Umm, a rhetrostat I believe. Not everyone thinks as big as us, 5 jars might be just enough for him. I have a 30 gallon TIT filled to the brim myself, it's a beautiful thing.

It has a 110F wire inside, but the temp only gets to 84F constantly...
The wire is on the bottom, and is wrapped around the outter edge in a big loop.
My digital shows a constant 84F for the 24H it has been on. (That picuter above is the exact one I have. (Might have been a poor yogurt maker, but will be a great myco maker!)
Myco, the other white yogurt!

A light dimmer switch would probably work just as well Theyre like 5$ at Ace hardware and work fine with my home-made pot vaporizer
How high is the temp inside the jars? If its using direct heat it may be getting a lot higher than 84 inside of the jars.. just a thought
Post a followup, Im gonna buy 2 or 3 of these if it works good

yo LaughingJim, do u think if u put a jar of perlite & water in along w/ 4 jars that it would keep a good humidity? the airspace is so small it dosent look like it would take much to humidify that thing I could probably mod the top and make it into a mini jar fruiting chamber.. unless it dosent like humidity

or you could get a styrofoam cooler, a cheap nightlight with the glass bulb, and an extension cord. Stays around 80F.
