Bracket Fungus (Chicken of the Woods) ID - am I correct? (PICS)
    #3622391 - 01/13/05 05:06 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Hi. Could ya help me I'd this bracket fungus I've got in my garden? I live in England, on the south coast, Hardiness Zone 7. The tree stump was cut four years ago, and is a Weeping Larch (conifer)

I think it is a LAETIPORUS SULPHUREUS (Sulphur Polypore)
Chicken of the Woods

My only mushroom guide (very old!) says the following :

"soft fleshed brackets, bright yellow to pinkish orange overall. On Oaks, Chesnuts, conifers. Autumn. Common. Large often imbricate brackets, irregular but more or less semicircular, 10-40cm (4-16in) across. Flesh soft and fragrant. Spores white, pip shaped. Edible and Good, best when young."

The description sounds good. It is also the only Bracket listed in my guide that is found on Conifers.

What do ya all think it is? Do you agree?

The ones I find are usually more orange, more "meaty" looking, and have more ruffled edges. But, I live in Ohio, so they may be different.

Those photos don't really look like Sulphur Shelves to me. The colors are much too drab looking. The specimens I've seen are brilliantly colored, with the edges of the caps being a bright sulphur yellow. Also, the ones I've seen are thicker and fleshier looking.

What is their texture? Are they woody, leathery, or fleshy?

What color is their spore print?

There are tons of bracket fungi of conifers. Here in Colorado the large majority of trees are conifers and we have bracket fungi all over. Most of them here are Fomes or Ganoderma, but there are several other genera represented.

Happy mushrooming!
