A key victory for the Union. Confederate forces launched an all out attack on a more strategical placed Union army.. Why did the confederate army not withdraw and fight on the even plains just miles away? In this battle alone 55,000 men died, roughly one third the total number. 7 out of 8 men were dead or wounded.
What if the rebels won the battle and took Washington- could that mentality of state sovernty have lasted much longer?
