How do you stay contam free when spawning straw??

AFOAF'S read all of the straw teks in the cultivation section. He was wondering, what clean procedures do you go through besides just washing your hands to ensure no contams land on your substrate while spawning?

All he saw was to put the pasteurized straw into a bin and sprinkle spawn over it. Doesn't this allow for contams to fall into the bin during this process?

Sure, contams are going to fall into your work area unless you work in front of a flowhood. I wouldn't worry about it, I do all my casings on my bed and usually don't bother to wash my hands or anything - no contamed casings for the last 10 runs or so. Straw is more prone to contams I believe, but if you pasteurize/sterilize (water/oven 170F) for several hours, I don't see a reason to treat it any different then a casing. By the way, you want to put down a couple layers of spawn. Try to blanket the straw one section at a time, then spawn, then straw, etc.. Don't just sprinkle spawn on top like you mentioned. Let it colonize at 85F for a couple days, quick colonization times will be on your side in the fight against contams.

I'm trying out straw soon and I don't plan on being any more sterile then I have with anything else.

Good luck

Yeah, contams will get in there, but the mushroom spawn is weeks ahead of anything that would compete with it and will colonize before anything else can take hold.
