Hello. I am looking for a nice collection of guitar scales, in tab format. A nice assortment would be nice (i.e. blues, jazz, basic, and exotic scales). If you can hook me up with a link or a txt file, that would be superb. Thanks in advance for any help you may offer. Peace.

My favorite is the whole tone scale
I have some guitar/music theory books with a ton of exercises and scales (most of them are jazz and blues but some are rock/metal) if you are interested.

You can work out guitar scales from ear - i did when i was like 9 so it isnt hard. Learning to play by ear is by far the most important step to take when learning guitar.

Thanks guys. That site is pretty good, nanananotehead.
I am not very knowning when it comes to theory, but why are those scales so short (i.e. only three strings)? The only scales I know are these two:
|---------------------------6-7-9- |-----------------------7-9------- |-----------------6-8-9----------- |-----------6-7-9----------------- |-----6-7-9----------------------- |-7-9-----------------------------
And
|-----------------------0-4- |-------------------0-4----- |-------------0-3-4--------- |---------0-3--------------- |-----0-3------------------- |-0-4-----------------------
I don't even know what they are called...
Anyways, thanks again for the link. I found this handy website, but found it somewhat complicating: http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/guitar/index_rb.html
Actually, I think I am getting the hang of it.

Yeah, thats the one I meant to tab out. I think it is a pentatonic scale, if memory serves me right.

learn the major scale, it's an inportant one. for blues learn the pentatonic blues, it's almost the same as the pentatonic only a few notes are added.

top scale is the major pentatonic form, the bottom is the minor blues.

all scales are repeating interval patterns that cover the entire guitar neck. usually books and stuff will just show you one octave or one position and you are supposed to extrapolate that to the rest of the guitar, although I realize that's not really obvious to beginners. the "pentatonic" scale someone typed up above is some strange hybrid of the minor pentatonic and blues scales, to illustrate the idea of positions though, I'll use the correct E minor pentatonic scale. the numbers with an * are the tonic notes (E). |-----------------------0*-3 |-------------------0-3----- |--------------0-2---------- |----------0-2*------------- |------0-2------------------ |-0*-3---------------------- 1st position Em pentatonic |------------------------3-5- |-------------------3-5*----- |--------------2-4---------- |---------2*-5-------------- |-----2-5------------------- |-3-5---------------------- 2nd position Em pentatonic (also could be called 1st position G pentatonic major if G was the tonic) |------------------------5-7- |-------------------5*-8----- |--------------4-7---------- |----------5-7-------------- |-----5-7*------------------ |-5-7----------------------- 3rd position Em pentatonic |--------------------------7-10- |---------------------8-10----- |-----------------7-9*---------- |-------------7-9------------- |------7*-10------------------ |-7-10----------------------- 4th position Em pentatonic |-----------------------------10-12* |------------------------10-12----- |------------------9*-12----------- |-------------9-12---------------- |-------10-12--------------------- |-10-12*--------------------------- 5th position Em pentatonic |------------------------------12*-15- |------------------------12-15----- |------------------12-14----------- |------------12-14*---------------- |-------12-14---------------------- |-12*-15--------------------------- then it starts over again with first position, just one octave up. if you go through and name all the notes, you'll see that it's all one scale and the only notes in it are E, G, A, B and D, hence the name pentatonic (penta=five). the interval pattern would be 1-b3-4-5-b7. if you want to play the blues scale you just add a b5 to that and get something like: |-------------------------0-3- |---------------------0-3----- |---------------0-2-3---------- |-----------0-2--------------- |-----0-1-2------------------- |-0-3------------------------- 1st position Em blues scale (E-G-A-Bb-B-D) the 5 positions of major and minor pentatonic scales are also sometimes shown in 'box' forms which I don't have a handy graphic of to illustrate but everyone has probably seen. the patterns always stay the same, you just change the tonic (starting note) to play the same scale in a different key. I like how that looknohands.com scale generator gives you the scale over the first 12 frets. hungarian minor is the shit . hopefully my rambling helped Edit: kinda was in a rush to type that out this morning. since you typed those others out, I just thought I'd mention |---------------------------6-7-9- |-----------------------7-9------- |-----------------6-8-9----------- |-----------6-7-9----------------- |-----6-7-9----------------------- |-7-9----------------------------- that's 2 different scales. B mixolydian in the bottom octave and B major on top |-----------------------0-4- |-------------------0-4----- |-------------0-3-4--------- |---------0-3--------------- |-----0-3------------------- |-0-4----------------------- that isn't a scale DH

baaaah, i know 3 scales, i've been playing for years upon years..
major minor pentatonic.
i only use pentatonic and minor.. even at that, it's slap full of chromatic[passing] tones and phrased with notes i pull straight out my arse..
i consider myself a well-rounded player.. i can solo fairly easy and whatnot.. i ear all of my playing now 'a days. if i hear a song or a lick in my head, i don't try and find the tab on the net.. i work it out on my fiddle. i know near nothing as far as theory goes.. and i think thats how more people should learn. tabs and having someone show u the way is wonderful, until u try and create your own..
^just my experience and 2cents.
that being said, learn the pentatonic, major, minor.. that's what i'd do, then fuck around with those and improvise! get a 4-track and lay down rythms and solo over that shitttt
i'm just rambling, i read the first page or so and i don't even know if you were asking for advice LOL
goodluck

uhhh, no. you're right about tabs being kind of bad, but learning basic music theory is one of the best things anyone that plays ANY instrument (yup, that includes the guitar) can do to improve their musical skills and understanding. anyone that has done so will attest to this. it's really not even debateable . I don't care what great guitarists couldn't even read sheet music or whatever. I guarantee it would help your overall playing/composition, it's not just for playing the flashy lead guitar shit.
playing by ear is great, but music theory is definitely something more people should learn, even if only to be able to communicate better with other musicians. as a side benefit it makes it easier to pick up different instruments. and you get to watch most other guitarist's eyes glaze over when you talk about it . seriously, I find it funny that players of pretty much any other instrument you can think of (besides percussion) are generally well versed in theory and embrace it while so many guitarists seem to have some strange unfounded aversion to it or think they're so great without it that they don't have any need to know it. it doesn't make you sound like a robot and it doesn't limit you in the least, it makes you a better musician.

agreed, theory is worth learning
but not worth getting discouraged over. if theory bores you, or stumps you and makes you not want to play your instrument, then quit the theory for awhile.

i don't think being a percussionist is any excuse to not learn the same theory as any other instrument. it helps when communicating with other musicians, and plus if you're a true percussionist (not just a drummer) you should know that stuff for playing timpani, vibes, marimba, etc..the piano is technically a percussion instrument.

you have a gift, not everyone can do that...when learning to play by ear, you should also have massive amounts of blank manuscript paper handy to incorporate your ear AND music theory together. no matter how good you are, you will still be better off knowing your shit.
