hydroton or perlite? will fans get mushrooms cracker dry? cheap hepa filters?
    #3621410 - 01/12/05 11:10 PM (20 years, 8 days ago)

I was wondering which would be a better for the bottom 2 inch layer of a terrarium, hydroton or perlite. I would be using a humidifier in conjunction with these. I hear hydroton has better water wicking capabilities(but I have a wire mesh frame suspending my crops, so that itsn't relevant) and is much cleaner, and less likely to contam. But I hear perlite will help maintain humidity better. which is better? and can perlite and/or hydroton be reused indefinitly?

Will 2 computer fans in a rubbermaid be able to get mushrooms cracker dry? or do i HAVE to use a desiccant to absorb the last bit of moisture? Also, do I NEED an absolutely air tight seal to use a desiccant like, will a normal rubbermaid with it's o-k seal suffice?

Does anyone know where i can purchase large amounts of small(less than 12" length and width) 99.99 or 99.97 hepa filters?

Thank you greatly for any help you can provide.

1. afoaf uses perlite for his pmp and hasn't had any problems. He has used it for multiple grows without changing it.

2. 2 comp fan prolly won't be enough. use the fans for a few days then use desiccant to finish them up and get them cracker dry.

perlite works good...just add some peroxide to the water you use to hydrate the perlite so bacteria and nasties dont grow.

fans will get the shrooms dryenough to break in two but not cracker dry.

I agree with all Plus,

I just wanted to add that you can also dilude 3% peroxide in your misting spray bottle (1-10 i believe) and it helps keep contams at bay as well, Just an extra boster i guess u'd say, for the 2nd and 3rd flushes...O and too much peroxide in the solution will damage myc. tissue, so less is better than more in this case

As far as drying goes, I just put all my mushies piled up on paper plates and put a fan in front of them for 48hrs or slightly longer. I usually flip the pile after 24 hours. Mine always come out cracker dry. At first I would use desicant but realized 48-72 hrs in front of a fan is plenty.
