Indonesia to US -- "Thanks. Now beat it."
    #3621087 - 01/13/05 12:11 AM (16 years, 9 months ago)

Some excerpts from http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=st...n_re_as/tsunami ((a lot more at the link -- you should read the whole thing)

Quote:

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - Indonesia announced that U.S. and other foreign troops providing tsunami disaster relief must leave the country by the end of March and ordered aid workers Wednesday to declare their travel plans or face expulsion from devastated Aceh province on Sumatra island.

The government?s moves highlight its sensitivities over a foreign military operation in this country ? albeit a humanitarian one ? and underscore its efforts to regain control of Aceh province, the scene of a decades-old conflict between separatist rebels and federal troops accused of human rights abuses.

The latest restrictions placed on the international presence came as the aircraft carrier leading the U.S. military?s tsunami relief effort steamed out of Indonesian waters Wednesday after the government declined to let the ship?s fighter pilots use its airspace for training missions. The USS Abraham Lincoln?s diversion was not expected to affect aid flights, however.

U.S. Marines have also scaled back their plans to send hundreds of troops ashore to build roads and clear rubble. The two sides reached a compromise in which the Americans agreed not to set up a base camp on Indonesia or carry weapons.

Instead, the Marines ? some 2,000 of whom were diverted to tsunami relief from duty in Iraq ? will keep a ?minimal footprint? in the country, with most returning to ships at night, said Col. Tom Greenwood, commander of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

In Washington, the White House asked the Indonesian government to explain why it was demanding that the U.S. military and other foreign troops providing disaster relief leave the country by March 31.

?We?ve seen the reports. ... We?ll seek further clarification from Indonesia about what this means,? said Scott McClellan, press secretary to President Bush. ?We hope that the government of Indonesia and the military in Indonesia will continue the strong support they have provided to the international relief efforts so far.?

Hey, why wait till March? Bail now. I'm sure their co-religionists in Saudi Arabia and Qatar will provide all the aid Indonesia needs.

Muslim hospitality and Muslim hostility sure looks an awful lot alike. So much so there?s no discernible difference between the two. Maybe these people should be left to their fate. Let their Allah provide for them. After all the brutal murders that have been committed in his name, surely he owes them at least a few morsels of food and maybe a road or two.

While I agree that is pretty messed up that they accept aid, then bite the hand that feeds them...I can hardly blame them. The U.S. hasn't exactly been making alot friends lately...The mere sight of U.S. troops on their soil must be somewhat disconcerting considering their only use lately has been that of conquest.

(Indonesia)is not the only affected country that is ambivalent about U.S. military aid.

After the earthquake and tsunami, the U.S. military dispatched the Abraham Lincoln battle group to Sumatra and three ships carrying Marines toward Sri Lanka, where more than 30,000 people were killed. But two ships carrying Marines were diverted to Sumatra after Sri Lanka downgraded its request for help. India, where more than 10,000 were killed, rebuffed U.S. aid offers.

Gotta wonder why the world dont even want your help guys

Maybe Ole GWB made a few passing remarks to the Indonesian President about Indonesian oil...and since Indonesia is already getting shafted by Oz on that one, he just flipped and said - OUT!

Pay them a fair wage for making the West's sports gear (and their oil) ...they might be able to look after themselves then and pride as well as attempts at self sufficiency might not be such an issue.

Policeman of the world - (well meaning??? but) corrupt and untrusted.

Fund the Red Cross and MSF to get in there...it might be a bit less threatening than the world's biggest, mightiest and clumsiest military - that loves stomping on Muslim countries.

Babylon shall fall!

"Pay them a fair wage for making the West's sports gear (and their oil) ...they might be able to look after themselves then and pride as well as attempts at self sufficiency might not be such an issue. "

That is something for THEM to do.

If they want minimum wage laws in their country -- THEY CAN MAKE THEM! Those in power can, at least. That's a shitton more than I can do. It's not my place to create laws in other countries. If they have no minimum wage law, how could I deem what should be acceptable? I know how much money _I_ need to make to survive, but I'm less than clueless how much it takes to survive in Boonies, Indonesia. Maybe it's $1 usd a day! I don't know.

Jaques you need to cool off about america and read what I posted -- not that everything America does is wrong (and not that everything America does is right).. but rather that no matter what IS done, it will greatly upset and offend a great deal of people across the world. If we don't do that, those people might not get upset, but others will. If we do something else, those two might be ok, but a third group pops up all indignent.. you see what I'm getting at, here. We're the big bad country on the planet -- that's what everyone's told right. We're popular to hate. C'mon, be hip, burn this flag with me.
It's not about reason, here. I think you forgot that.

erm i think you forget one thing mushmonkey - IRAQ?

i wasnt heated in the first place, i was just saying perhaps this is good for america, its help is not needed, so how about america save itself the cost and concentrate on problem within its own country perhaps? no matter how rich, all countries have their own issues to deal with so with that perhaps this is time for american to concentrate on itself more as it seems quite obvious countries from the outside are rejecting its help. im sure if american were to leave indonesia straight away with all its troops no one will really complain, so in this instant it can be seen to be doing something right for once. it also shows comprehension from the amercian side. but knowing the drama queens, they will kick up a stink.

You could choose to make purchaces only from businesses who paid them a "living wage". That would be better than them passing some restrictive law that would probably be cutting their own throats.

Your posts have gotten increasingly more ***edited by Rono*** you're treading a very thin line here...***, pinky since my vacation from PAL. I say this because on True Christians unite, the most thick headed religionists on the Western spectrum were saying the exact same you said in regard to the Asian disaster. You're brighter than this, pinky. Where are those well-researched posts you used to put up half a year ago? What happened, pinky?

I don't know about you, but I have my preferences set to display twenty posts per page. So the first page consists of (for me) sixteen current posts and four stickied posts. Of the sixteen I'm looking at now, there are :

-- two dealing with the US's decision to suspend the search for WMD stockpiles in Iraq,
-- one (this one) dealing with a corrupt government's (Indonesia's) wish to have foreigners assisting their people out of the country before their kleptocracy is exposed to world attention,
-- one on the FAA's ridiculously ineffective way of identifying potential terrorists looking to board US aircraft,
-- one on the downside of reducing the burning of fossil fuels,
-- one on the wisdom (or lack thereof) of the Confederate army's tactics in a key battle in a conflict which changed the face of US national identity forever,
-- one on the penalties of drug trafficking in Muslim countries
-- one on the implications of judicial approval of warrantless surveillance by American police,
-- one on a court ruling showing sentencing guidelines have been misapplied for years.

That's nine out of sixteen posts addressing issues of politics, activism and law.

To that we could add Annapurna1's post on the ludicrous rationalization for spending more taxpayer money on going to the moon to presumably harvest Helium 3 for use in fusion-generated power, and the recent turn that 'The Upcoming Shock" has taken (at Phluck's instigation) into a discussion on whether or not current Black American culture stifles educational opportunities.

That makes nine solid discussions, two with potential, and five where people are more or less posting for shits and giggles.

I've seen worse days here.

Quote:

"Pay them a fair wage for making the West's sports gear (and their oil) ...they might be able to look after themselves then and pride as well as attempts at self sufficiency might not be such an issue. "

That is something for THEM to do.

If they want minimum wage laws in their country -- THEY CAN MAKE THEM! Those in power can, at least. That's a shitton more than I can do. It's not my place to create laws in other countries.

Hey dude - You're taking this a bit personally...I'm not asking you yourself to pay Indonesians more money or campaign for it or anything like that.

Funny thing is the gus at Nike and Adidas who charge like $100-?100 and double that per pair of shoes that they pay a few dollars to get made means the owners of those companies are making a killing - quite literally. Meanwhile the sweatshop workers are getting stuffed and so are the western consumers to be fair. The execs are laughing long and hard though.

It is nigh on impossible for Indonesia to set a minimum wage because they are desperate - and the big corporations know this.

Countries that hit the technology development front line behind others are always stuck this way. It is impossible for them to get on their feet without help, or at least understanding and compassion.

They have no money so they can't make the equipment to drill their own oil reserves...but they have needs and so as needs must they get stuffed for the sake of survival.

They must make the sportsgear for the same reason...because they have precious little option.

Starve....or nearly starve, but survive.

Without decency in business, and humanity, it will always be this way.

OOhohhoh yes they would.

Check up on all the times Germany, Korea, Japan, and hell.. any other country.. has complained about US bases inside their boarders.
The US comments that they may be pulling out, and removing their base.
That country then throws a stink.. and our troops stay there.

You could choose to make purchaces only from businesses who paid them a "living wage". That would be better than them passing some restrictive law that would probably be cutting their own throats.

heh... and i counter with it being too impossible to investigate every single product one purchases. Made in China? Ok.. now to just give that factory a call and ask what they pay, and then give some random Chinese in the area a call and ask them what they would consider a 'living wage'.

If you live in let's say NYC, your cost of living is going to be astronomically higher than if you were living in bumfuck, 3rd-World.
I personally have no idea even within THIS country all the ins and outs of different regions.. let alone what is poor, comfortable, or wealthy in another country. I cannot decide for them what a living wage is.

They have no money so they can't make the equipment to drill their own oil reserves...but they have needs and so as needs must they get stuffed for the sake of survival.

They must make the sportsgear for the same reason...because they have precious little option.

Who says every country must be an industrialized country? Who says those oil reserves must be drilled?

It's a sham, neither of those things are a neccessity. I'm fairly sure that humans existed for thousands of years all over this planet without having to work in a Nike sweatshop or sell their souls to get some rigs to pump out oil.

Well.. yeah. I don't think you could really find too many people to support the bloated and excessive reach-arounds that execs give themselves and eachother.

I have a feeling they'd be less hostile to the sight of Red Cross workers than they are to US soldiers. Perhaps we should take this as an opportunity to reevaluate our policy on foreign aid.

Red Cross and Red Crescent should work together.
