Patching is basicly the means of covering the surface layer of mycl. that has broken through(grown) the top layer of your casing. The idea of patching is to have the mycl. on an even plane if you will., in hopes to have an even pin set.

no. its adding a small amount more of your casing material to cover up a previous spot on the casing.

You both said the same thing
Patching isn't needed really...
I basically put in the sub, even it out, let it incubate W/O a casing for a day or 2, this allows the myc. to patch its self up and become a whole mass, then all you have to do is put on your casing layer evenly, you shouldnt even have to incubate it after, don't really need a think casing layer...
I say this because when you "patch", you do allow for a more even pinset, but you lose nutes b/c the myc. is now growing off your casing layer, and your casing layer has some next to no nutes, its there to hold moisture ect, therefore, that's why i think the way i do it is, pretty great...but other people might differ, i'm trying to do an experiment soon and see what yields the most, there's a lot variables so it'll be tough, but i'm pretty damn determined
I'll be the next agar LOL

Actually it (a casing) isn't necessary but it will improve yields considerably often for those not in the know. Patching can be done during incubating or after harvesting. The reason we patch during incubating is to keep the myc from prematurely pinning therefore taking vital energy away from casings true pinset resulting in a very poor pinset more than often FYI. The reason we patch after harvesting is to coverup any exposed substrate to not only help with contams but to addback the necessary microclimate for future flushes/pinning. You guys are funny future agar sorry I'll tell yas right now nobody will ever take his place but with a lot of ingenuity and a ton of motivation you will make a name for yourselves maybe.

thank you for straightening them out hyphae, i was afraid i was going to have to explain about patching.
agar is definately an asset to the community, as well as hyphae. nobody will take either one's place, but i hope some day i can be as helpful and full of knowledge as they are.
