Finch Seed?

I just bought a 25 pound bag of finch seed to use as substrate. Do I need a pressure cooker to force water into the finch seed or will a regular cooking pot work fine? Also could anybody comment on how well finch seed has worked for them. And is it suitable for spawn or compost? Thanks

Great..glad to hear that finch makes a good spawn, cause I have twenty five pounds of it. Is a poly-fil filter absouletly necessary? I have used straw as a compost before but I do not like how easily it contanimates. Is there an alternative compost that would respond well to finch seed inoculate spawn? So I do NOT need a pressure cooker, I could use my regular cooking pot successfully?

if you are having problems with contam on the straw then look over your pasturization procedures and maybe go with dung. Rembember to pasturise and not sterilize and you shold see results. Good luck w' the finch. alder

Everything I've read about using birdseed suggests that it is necessary to use a pressure cooker to sterize it - regular boiling won't get at encysted spores. Also it is important to soak 24 hours prior to sterilization in order to induce germination of all pathogens thereby making them susceptible to the sterilization process. This will kill all contams for sure.

my finch jars just got done yesterday. i used a ratio of 4:1 finch to verm, and they got completely colonized in 11 days. no special strain, just pes hawian. i also didnt use polyfill filter thing. just plain metal lid, with tape on the holes during sterlization, and took it off when i put them into the incubation chamber. the mycelium also looks better on the fich jars then it does on the brf/verm ones. it also colonized a day faster.
i may, fucking drop something natural somewhere and it might grow into another piece of shit like you. i dont recognize any of you fucking people, youre not real, you came out of comic books.
