That way you would pasteurize the dung not sterilize. To sterilize use a PCooker or PCanner.

Peace,

Hmm, I've read about people baking dung/manure in an oven at say 180 degs for an hour or so, and I've always thought "Whaaat!? Surely that's far too hot, and'll just make a burnt mess"

It just occurred to me that maybe you backward yanks are talking about 180 FARENHEIT:crazy:

Am I right?

If you seal the bag, it will burst. Better is to use a polyfil cork which will allow pressure to escape.

That will pasteurize the dung, but that's not all that's required. It should also have an even moisture distribution.

Please report back and let us know what you ended up doing and how it worked. I've not tried any dung pasteurization in the oven. Too squeamish.. I do mine outdoors in a pillow sac in a pot on a hot plate to keep odor out of the house. Then cool it indoors by hanging the pillow sac over the stationary tub overnight.

Many roads lead to same place. :)

Egghead you must have an odd tubb. I have never heard of a stationary tub; all of mine are ambulatory.

Yes CDC thats 180 F.

To get the proper moisture content take the total dry weight (or volume), set about a 1/4 of the dung aside if you want 75% moisture content (use proper ratios: the % that is saturated after the dry dung is added will be the moisture %), saturate the 75% then add the dry 25%. Viola 75% moisture content. But your dung must be dry to do this.

When I use dung all I do is add enough water so that when you squeeze it one or two drops drip, then I wrap it up in some tin foil and throw it in the oven at 200 degress for one hour. Wait until it cools and then use it to spawn, case or whatever.

Never had any problems. I think dung is pretty contam resistant. I get mine from the fields.
