ok, i just had another outbreak of rhizopus ( thanks auto for identifying it ). strong yeasty/alcohol smell with vertical rhizos poking out of casing top with black dots upon sporulation. very fast spreading contam. question:
procedure:
after shaking up the mycelium, i spread it out onto perlite and then cover cocofiber ( unsterilized grobrick )...i checked the substrate and it was covered with blue/green colored mould from within ....i'm not sure if this is the color of the rhizopus mould though.
im trying to find the source of this contam. my jars of bs were 100% colonized upon casing. would it be possible for the rhizopus to remain ungerminated and in the birdseed still after colonization of the bs by the mycelium? basically i'm trying to narrow it down to either the bs, the casing ( coir - grobrick), air in my growroom, or the containers i am using. thanks everyone

I have been gone awhile I see. Due to holiday's etc. I will be moving the contamination faq to september........
The source of contams, I recentlyhad a B+ casing wich colonised perfectly on rye grain, cased, had 1 flush and than!! contaminated by green aspergillus mold. (aspergillus comes in different colours).
So the source of contam can be present in your birdseed without noticing it, and it can develop in the casing when you think nothing can go wrong anymore.......mold contams are usually because enviromental unsterility, bacteria from unsterile equippment. The strong yeast/alcohol smell you got from your rhizopus can also be produced by bacillus/wetspot (also a sour smell present?).
Best way is cleaning thorough setrilizing everything again, amd start over.
