BULK <---&---> CAKES...... is a misnomer.
Bulk is a "bulk substrate" such as compost, or manure/straw mix. It is "spawned" with colonized grains (in a pan - tub container), incubated, then cased & fruited out.
Cakes is generally PF TEK... in half...or pint jars.
Differance is like DAY & NIGHT

He probably means how many half a pint cakes he must use to spawn to a certain amount of bulk substrate?
1 to 4 is best, 1 to 10 is worst but can work, isnt it? Like 2 cakes on 1 gallon bulksubstrate to 2 cakes on 2,5 gallon being the max?

Yes, you'll get different answers on when and how much to shake. I'd say shake it right away to mix the cakes in there and then again after about 20% is colonized.
Also, the more you chop your cakes up the faster it will go. A food processer or blender would make it easy.

I would just mix it real well and then let it go.... With straw some teks will say to make layers. Layer straw, layer spawn, layer straw.. etc.
Do some research here both in the posts and the bulk faq. Exampel: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7937
Good luck. MF

That last question is the ratio part you may have missed. as long as you don't over pack your straw (or whatever) the thickness of the layers vs. the thickness of your spawn depends on how much spawn you have or wish to spend the time making. Generally speaking the more spawn you put in between your layers, means faster colonization, which means the mycelium will produce it's own natural fungicides that will greatly decrease the chances that contamination occurs. As Far as the thickness of your layers or straw all I can say is, when I inoculate with say, something the size of colonized grain, .5" would be a waste because each one of those pieces of mycelium covered rye is an inoculation point. The ratio your asking about is 1" straw/ .5" spawn. That's a 50% ratio, or a 10:5 ratio. The first post in response to your question says, 15% you should try that.

you will case only the top and only after colonization of the substrate is complete. read the FAQ. the fact that you needed to ask that question shows that you don't understand the purpose of a casing layer, and without understanding that, you'll probably fail at making a good one, which sucks, because by that time you'd have been oh-so-close to having a successful bulk grow...
yet-oh-so far. read the FAQ.
